This job involves hands-on maintenance of highways and roads, including operating small equipment like dump trucks and rollers to haul materials, patch potholes, and clear debris.
Workers also flag traffic for safety during repairs and assist with tasks like installing driveways or handling emergencies like snow plowing.
It's a good fit for someone who enjoys outdoor physical work, can handle tough weather, and is willing to get a commercial driver's license quickly.
Operates a dump truck for hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials and debris.
Operates a steel-wheel roller in the paving of driveways and patching of the roadway. Flags traffic during road repairs to control flow of traffic to protect workers, general public and equipment.
Assists in the installation of driveways; using hand tools, hand tamp, place aggregates, remove mailboxes and reinstall and help place large sections of pipe.
Performs duties using manual labor, in such maintenance task as clearing of right-of-ways, cleaning drainage ditches, repairing shoulders, patching potholes, making base repairs, repairing bridges, paving driveways, and laying sideline/cross line pipe.
Operates front-end loader in the loading of materials needed for maintenance operations, e.g. earth materials, clay, sand and aggregate.
Assists in emergency and inclement weather operations, may include being available for extended working hours or 12-hour shifts.
Operates dump truck with snow plow attachment during emergency and inclement weather operations. Performs other related duties as assigned.
There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.
Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
