Full Job Description

In conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance activities, performs skilled highway maintenance worker functions and operates light equipment such as a 5 yard dump truck, forklifts (tool carriers), pipe washers, rollers <=4 tons, tractor mounted brooms, and other related small equipment. Performs a variety of tasks for the Ditching Crew related to maintenance operations, including, but not limited to cleaning and shaping ditches, cleaning, installing, repairing, or replacing storm drainage systems and structures, repairing sinkholes and washouts, clipping shoulders and grading slopes and shoulders, repairing bridge deficiencies, etc. Assists other maintenance crews, as needed, with other maintenance operations to complete routine maintenance work and maintenance plans. Requires completing ditching, shoulder clipping, and pipe cleaning operations in the assigned area(s) for each fiscal year (1/5 of the county) and completing work requests within 30 days based on business plan. Assists with placing traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone according to the SCDOT Work Zone Traffic Control Manual and Field Guide. Flags traffic in work zones during roadway repair and ditching operations to control flow of traffic to protect workers, general public, and equipment. Flags traffic using sign board and/or hand held flags. Operates small engine equipment such as chain saws, tamping machines, pavement breakers, pole saws, and weed eaters as needed. Performs duties using manual labor in maintenance operations as needed. Conducts daily preventative maintenance activities on all assigned equipment and vehicles to ensure that equipment is greased and lubricated, proper coolant and oil (engine and hydraulic) levels are maintained, hoses and belts are inspected for deterioration, tires are properly inflated, and no leakages are present to get maximum utilization of equipment. Conducts pre-trip and safety inspections on all assigned vehicles and equipment. Assists in tracking and reporting daily work performed to supervisors, including specific accomplishments, work locations, equipment utilization, and quantity of materials used. Assists in emergency, on-call, or inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended 12-hour shifts. Operates both anti-icing and removal equipment (snow plows and sand and salt spreaders) during snow and ice response on highways and bridges. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
