Summary

This job involves operating small trucks and equipment to haul materials and maintain highways and bridges, performing hands-on tasks like repairing roads, clearing debris, and directing traffic in work zones.

It also includes manual labor during construction, emergencies, or bad weather to keep roads safe and clear.

A good fit would be someone physically fit, comfortable with outdoor work in tough conditions, and eager to learn to drive larger vehicles.

Full Job Description

Operates 5 yard standard dump truck and flatbed truck for hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials, and debris. Operates small equipment such as Forklift, sweeper tractor with broom, tractor with mower < = 10 f. wide in conjunction with highway and bridge maintenance operations, and standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and sand spreader or brine sprayer applicator for removal of snow and ice from highways and bridges. Performs manual labor in a variety of activities associated with the construction, repair, and preservation of state highway roads and bridges. Assists with placement of traffic control devices to properly set up maintenance work zones. Serves as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones. Removes litter, debris, and dead animals from roadway and rights-of-way. Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment /vehicle inspection in accordance with the Department's most current rules, policies, and procedures for fleet safety. Operates and maintains small equipment, power tools and hand tools to perform a variety of highway and bridge maintenance activities. Assists in emergency or inclement weather operations; may include being available for extended hours or 12-hour shifts. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

There are no minimum training or experience requirements for this classification. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.

The physical demands for the essential functions involves bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, and grasping. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Walking for extended periods, treading rough terrain, working in close proximity to motoring traffic, and in natural environmental hazards. May be required to work outside normal scheduled work week; especially during inclement weather.
