The Opportunity

WSDOT is seeking to fill multiple Highway Maintenance Worker 2 positions in Wenatchee, WA.

These journey-level positions are members of the regional maintenance organization tasked with working with and assisting other WSDOT work groups.

These positions may be situationally assigned to work with and under a number of different work group structures depending on needs of the region on a day to day basis.

These positions will perform a variety of skilled highway maintenance tasks while maintaining personal, co-worker and public safety as a primary objective in the planning and performance of all work assignments.

Highway Maintenance Workers on these crews will be responsible for maintenance and repair of highways, bridges, overpasses, and other highway structures to ensure the safe and efficient movement of people and commerce.

In these roles, you will also perform a variety of skilled maintenance tasks and may occasionally lead a crew in the absence of a Highway Maintenance Worker 3.


What to Expect

These positions perform work that is often physical in nature and performed primarily outdoors and often next to high-volume, high-speed traffic that may require standing for extended periods of time; HMW2 may work at elevated heights above 50 feet over land or water.

Work may also include traversing in rough, steep, and uneven terrain. A typical schedule is Monday through Friday, 40 hours per week, for 4, 10-hour days.

Weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non-scheduled or call-out emergencies.


Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Workers will:

  • Design and set up traffic control; full road or bridge closures; perform traffic control; and conduct moving and stational traffic control operations.
  • Perform asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair; apply concrete, asphalt and synthetic materials.
  • Perform drainage maintenance; sign maintenance and repair; guardrail, fence and impact attenuator installation and repair.
  • Perform tree removal and vegetation management.
  • Perform snow and ice control, including application of anti-icing compounds to road surface with truck mounted equipment, loading trucks, hauling materials such as sand, gravel and other items, and maintaining stockpile sites.
  • Track, document and report daily work activities, account for inventory and inventories highway section.
  • Perform maintenance and minor repair on equipment and hand tools.
  • Operate Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A, B and C highway equipment as designated on the approved Department of Transportation Equipment List (TEF) for highway maintenance.


Qualifications

To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Highway and Roadway Maintenance Expertise: Demonstrated experience performing routine and emergency maintenance on roadway and highways, snow and ice operations, heavy equipment operation, or equivalent work requiring similar knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Safety Awareness & Compliance: Ability to participate in the creation and implementation of PreActivity Safety Plans (PASP) and attend regular safety training.
  • Technical & Administrative Proficiency: Basic computer/electronic tablet skills with demonstrated ability to communicate, capture, and retrieve information.
  • Growth Mindset: Actively demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth.
  • Service-Oriented: Takes action to meet the needs of others.


In addition to the competencies above, the following are also required:

  • A valid Class B CDL without restrictions and the ability to obtain a Class A CDL, without restrictions, N (Tanker) endorsement, within twelve (12) months of hire (WSDOT will assist in training for this licensing requirement).
  • A valid CDL medical card.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends, holidays, and perform emergency callouts/stand-by 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
  • Ability to transport, move, and manipulate various types of equipment weighing 50 pounds or more.
  • Ability to traverse rough, steep, and uneven terrain and work elevated heights, above 25 feet over land or water.


It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Traffic Control Expertise: Demonstrated knowledge of traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging.
  • Advanced Highway Maintenance & Equipment Operations: Demonstrated experience performing highway maintenance activities, including operating equipment, conducting snow and ice control, implementing traffic control measures, and completing roadway, drainage, and roadside repairs.


In addition to the preferred competencies above, the following are also preferred:

  • A valid Class A CDL with N endorsement, without restrictions.
  • A valid Washington State Flagging Card, with experience performing traffic control per MUTCD including planning, setting signs and cones or barrels, and flagging

  • This recruitment will be used to fill five (5) vacancies and may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.
  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
