This job involves operating drawbridges on a Washington state highway to safely open and close them for boats while keeping road traffic moving smoothly.
You'll also handle basic upkeep of the bridge area, like cleaning and painting over graffiti, and communicate with boat operators and team members.

The OpportunityWSDOT is currently seeking multiple Highway Maintenance Workers 1 in our Northwest Region.

This position operates the SR 529 Draw Bridges. This position is critical in fostering a respectful and healthy work environment.
What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role, the Highway Maintenance Worker 1 will:
QualificationsTo be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:General Maintenance and Tool Use: Demonstrated ability to perform general maintenance tasks in field or facility environments, including safe and effective use of tools, equipment, and basic repair practicesVehicle Operation: Ability to safely operate state-owned vehicles.Working at Heights and Safety Awareness: Ability to safely perform job duties on elevated platforms, catwalks, or structures while maintaining balance, situational awareness, and adherence to established safety protocols.Reliability and Work Ethic: Proven dependability in meeting work schedules, maintaining punctuality, and proactively communicating availability or changes with supervisors.Physical Handling and Material Movement: Ability to independently manipulate, carry, and maneuver materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds while applying proper ergonomic practices.Interpersonal Communication and Public Interaction: Skill in interacting effectively, professionally, and respectfully with the public, coworkers, marine traffic operators, and regulatory partners, including the U.S.
Coast Guard.Computer and Records Management: Competence in using personal computers for data entry and maintaining electronic records, including familiarity with basic software such as spreadsheets and documentation tools.Commitment to Inclusion and Workplace Respect: Demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and equitable work environment.
It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:
Marine or Waterfront Operations: Experience performing duties in marine, waterfront, or similar environments involving water-based operations or exposure.
