Summary

This job is for a lead heavy equipment mechanic in Washington's transportation department, where you'll supervise a team of mechanics, handle equipment repairs and maintenance, and ensure everything runs smoothly for road and bridge work.

The OpportunityWSDOT is currently seeking a Heavy Equipment Mechanic 4 in our North Central Region!

The Transportation Equipment Fund (TEF) program mission is to provide support to our TEF customers with well-maintained reliable, safe and economical equipment that meets our user’s needs so that they may accomplish their services to the public is safe, efficient, timely, and cost-effective manner.

This position supports and accomplishes Agency TEF program mission as well as supporting & accomplishing regional Equipment maintenance and operations, including leading, guiding, mentoring, working alongside to include encouraging, helping and supervising regional TEF staff with responsibility, ethics and integrity at all levels.

This position will coordinate with the other Supervisor for region fuel orders, assist region superintendent with purchase orders, align the region’s outer shops to align with the Wenatchee shops, TEF mission statement and regional standards.


What to Expect
Among the varied range of responsibilities held within this role you will:

  • Supervise, lead, guide heavy equipment mechanics.
  • Coordinate regularly with associated TEF shop supervisor and equipment superintendent.
  • Perform annual performance evaluations.
  • Approve of DOTtime annual and sick leave, ensure accurate records.
  • Support and advise the equipment superintendent in gathering info for the replacement of both light and heavy equipment for the region/agency.
  • Inspect new equipment upon arrival, support and ensure contract compliance.
  • Dispose of equipment according to agency policies.
  • Set goal that NCR maintains preventative maintenance performance goals of 90% or higher.
  • Perform as an expert M5 user, teach, assist, resolve problems with equipment data, generate various heavy equipment repair, labor, parts, fuel related reports from M5 for auditing and efficiency purposes equipment.
  • Support approvals and review of PCMS transactions.
  • Provide, monitor, and ensure adequate and responsible repair parts inventory.
  • Coordinate North Central parts inventory site reviews for compliance with TEF policy, resolves problems or noncompliance issues relating to State inventory requirements.


Qualifications
To be considered for this opportunity, the following are required:

  • Heavy Equipment Maintenance & Repair Expertise: Demonstrated ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain heavy-duty equipment and vehicles used in roadway maintenance, construction, and snow and ice operations.
  • Advanced Mechanical & Technical Systems Knowledge: Ability to apply in-depth knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic systems to perform and oversee complex repairs and preventive maintenance.
  • Leadership, Coaching & Technical Guidance: Experience providing clear direction, coaching, and technical support to staff to ensure consistent, high-quality work and adherence to operational standards.
  • Contract Compliance & Procurement Application: Ability to interpret and apply TEF & DES contract requirements related to equipment and fuel purchasing as assigned.
  • Data Monitoring & Performance Analysis: Ability to utilize data to monitor shop performance, fuel usage, and preventive maintenance metrics to support operational decisions.
  • Fleet Management Systems Proficiency: Demonstrated experience using M5 Fleet Equipment Management software or equivalent electronic maintenance management systems.
  • Shop Equipment Operation & Fabrication Skills: Experience safely operating diagnostic tools and shop equipment (e.g., scanners, welders, plasma torches, presses, hoists, and hand/power tools) to repair equipment and fabricate specialized components.
  • Communication & Team Collaboration: Ability to communicate detailed information clearly and effectively to diverse audiences, both verbally and in writing, while fostering teamwork.
  • Customer Service & Responsiveness: Experience delivering high-quality customer service and effectively addressing and resolving service-related concerns.
  • Safety Compliance & Risk Awareness: Demonstrated commitment to adhering to safety policies and performing work in a safe and compliant manner.
  • Independent Work & Prioritization: Ability to work independently, prioritize workload, and manage multiple assignments in a dynamic environment.
  • Licensure & Certification Requirements: Possession of a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class A without restrictions and ability to obtain required fuel certifications.

It is preferred that qualified candidates also have:

  • Advanced Industry Knowledge: Advanced understanding of heavy automotive and/or heavy equipment industry standards and best practices.
  • Professional Certifications & Technical Credentials: Relevant industry certifications such as Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) or equivalent credentials in heavy equipment or fleet management.
  • Supervision & Crew Leadership: Experience leading or supervising staff, providing direction, building team cohesion, and making sound decisions in high-pressure situations.
  • Workload Management: Proven ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining quality and efficiency.


Important Notes

Must be able to report in service to assigned duty station within 1 hour of an after-hours call. May include to work alternate and emergency shifts as situations dictate.

Respond to emergency situations in all weather conditions; 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, alone or a part of a team as needed. May require working long hours, may include some night work.

Occasional standby and call-back may be required.

  • Typical schedule is 4 -10-hour shifts, 40 hours per week. There are emergent situations that can require weekends and holidays that require response to non-scheduled call-out emergencies.
  • This recruitment may also be used to fill additional positions per business needs.

  • In addition to base salary, employees may be entitled to other forms of compensation depending on the type, duties, or location of the position.
