This job involves maintaining highways by operating heavy machinery like backhoes and excavators, installing and repairing road signs and markings, and handling traffic control during work zones.
Workers also clear snow and ice from roads using trucks with plows and spreaders, especially in bad weather.
It's a good fit for someone with hands-on experience in construction or maintenance who is physically fit, comfortable working outdoors in tough conditions, and eager to get a commercial driver's license.
Performs routine signing duties such as but not limited to sign maintenance and replacement in a large county with interstate responsibilities.
Performs general highway maintenance functions and operates heavy equipment including, but not limited to, a backhoe, a excavator, front end loader, motor grader, etc.
Performs new sign installations as directed by Traffic Engineering. Also installs and replaces pavement markings as needed to ensure traffic safety. Inspects signs for serviceability and safety.
Assists with the placement of traffic control devices to properly set up a maintenance work zone. Serves as a flagger to safely direct and control traffic in maintenance work zones.
Operates standard dump truck with snow plow attachment and salt spreader to remove snow and ice from roadways and bridges during inclement weather.
Conducts and documents pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspection in accordance with the Department's most current rules, policies and procedures for fleet safety. Performs other related duties as assigned.
One (1) year of related work experience; or an approved acceptable equivalence. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material.
Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
This position requires walking for extended periods, treading rough and uneven terrain, and working in close proximity to motoring traffic and natural environmental hazards.
May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies.
Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
