Job Description

Summary

This job involves overseeing health services in a prison, including coordinating medical, dental, mental health, and support care for inmates, while also providing hands-on nursing when needed.

It requires managing a team and working directly with prisoners inside a secure facility.

A good fit would be an experienced registered nurse with leadership skills who is comfortable in high-security environments and passionate about correctional healthcare.

Key Requirements

  • Completion of a nursing degree or program accepted for RN licensure by the Michigan Board of Nursing
  • Possession of a valid Michigan registered nurse license in good standing
  • Two years of experience as a Registered Nurse 13 or Registered Nurse Manager 13, or one year as Registered Nurse 14 or Registered Nurse Manager 14
  • Ability to coordinate clinical activities including medical, dental, psychological, and mental health services
  • Direct supervisory responsibility over prisoners for more than 50% of work time
  • Provision of direct clinical care when appropriate
  • Work inside the secure perimeter of a correctional facility

This position is responsible for efficient and effective management of health services within an Ambulatory Health Care Unit. Effective management entails the coordination of all clinical activities, dental, medical, psychological services, mental health and all ancillary and support services. In addition this position provides direct clinical care, when appropriate. This is a test designated position. This position has direct contact with and supervisory responsibility over prisoners for more than 50% of work time. The work station of this position is located inside the secure perimeter of the facility.


Requirements

Education
Completion of a degree in nursing or nursing school educational program accepted for registered nurse licensure by the Michigan Board of Nursing.

Experience
Two years of experience equivalent to a Registered Nurse 13 or a Registered Nurse Manager 13, or one year equivalent to a Registered Nurse 14 or a Registered Nurse Manager 14.

Possession of a Michigan registered nurse license in good standing.

New hires to the MDOC along with previous MDOC employees that are returning after being away from the department for more than two years will complete Non-Custody New Employee Training (NCNET) either 40 hours or 80 hours of initial in-person training based on their level of offender contact and job classification.

All new employees will complete additional online training to successfully complete their non-custody new employee training.
