Public Health Consultant E (9-P11)

The WIC Public Health Consultant serves as a developing professional responsible for providing consultation, training, and technical assistance to Local Public Health Officials, Local WIC Agency staff, and other stakeholders regarding the administration and operation of the USDA Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC).

Working within the Training, Evaluation, and Compliance Unit, the incumbent supports WIC policy implementation, assists in training local agency staff, and helps monitor local agency compliance with federal and state requirements.

This position develops knowledge and skills in assigned program areas—such as WIC anthropometric and laboratory practices, training, and technical assistance—and contributes to the development of training materials, policy clarification, and program evaluation activities.

Consultants are assigned to support a region or group of local WIC agencies, helping ensure agencies are evaluated according to federal standards and receive appropriate training and consultation.

The Michigan WIC Program operates statewide and is funded through the USDA.

Within the different levels, entry (9), intermediate (10) and experienced (11), duties are performed with increasing independence, complexity, and responsibility within established WIC policies, procedures, and guidelines.

Public Health Consultant A (12)

The WIC Public Health Consultant has the responsibility to provide leadership, consult, advise, train and provide technical assistance to Local Public Health Officials, Local WIC Agency Staff, and interest groups concerning the administration and operation of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) WIC Program whose purpose is to safeguard the health of low-income women, infants and children up to age 5 who are at nutritional risk.

Within the Training, Evaluation and Compliance Unit, consultants are assigned responsibility for WIC policy, training local agency staff, and monitoring local agency compliance.

This position serves as the State WIC Program Area Lead (PAL) in the areas of WIC laboratory, anthropometric, training and technical assistance.

Unit staff develop WIC training materials and provide consultation to local WIC agencies.

Consultants are assigned to work with a region or group of local WIC agencies, to assure the agencies are evaluated according to federal standards and guidelines and receive appropriate training and technical assistance.

The Michigan WIC Program operates statewide and is federally funded through the USDA.

Requirements

EducationPossession of a master's degree in public health, health communication, health policy or a public health-related field such as nursing, epidemiology, health education, health economics, dietetics/nutrition management, genetics, or speech and audiology; a master's degree in social work; master's degree in counseling; master's degree in special education with specialization in blind/visual disabilities; or a master's degree in public or business administration with a health care concentration.

Public Health Consultant 10One year of professional, post-master's experience as a consultant in a field of public health equivalent to a Public Health Consultant 9.Public Health Consultant P11Two years of professional, post-master's experience as a consultant in a field of public health equivalent to a Public Health Consultant, including one year equivalent to a Public Health Consultant 10.Public Health Consultant 12Three years of professional, post-master's experience as a consultant in a field of public health equivalent to a Public Health Consultant, including one year equivalent to a Public Health Consultant P11.

Additional Information

The physical location of this position is 320 S. Walnut, 5N, Lansing, MI 48933. Based on operational needs and within established limits, remote work and alternate or hybrid work schedule requests for this position may be considered.

Selected candidates who have been approved to work remotely or a hybrid schedule must complete that work within Michigan. Candidates should confirm work location and schedule at the time of interview.

Employees will be provided computers to perform state work. Phones may also be provided for necessary communications. If working remotely, employees will be responsible for providing other components of a remote office at their own expense, including:

• A secure work location that allows privacy and prevents distractions.
• A high-speed internet connection of at least 25 Mbps download and 5 Mbps upload.
• Suitable lighting, furniture, and utilities.
