Full Job Description

Position is located at the Richard L. Roudebush VAMC Indianapolis, IN within the Nursing, Perioperative PCS Surgery Service.

The Health Tech provides assistance of a technical, specialized, or support nature to health and medical personnel in the diagnosis or treatment of patient illnesses or medical conditions.

Supports medical and health care professionals in tests and procedures to diagnose and treat medical conditions. Performs technical work in support of diagnostic test and procedures.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 04/07/2026.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.

Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Provides assistance in the treatment of patients.

Understands and carries out the requests made by the health care professional. Provides clerical and administrative support. Experience with electronic medical records system.

Physical Demands: Work pace ranges from sedentary to a very rapid pace to include walking, standing, bending, and reaching.

Includes lifting and positioning patients in/onto exam position or on/off gurney, and/or wheelchair.

Work requires specific, but common, physical abilities such as agility and dexterity to position patients for examination or treatment in usual alternate positions for patients with common disabilities.

Heavy lifting occasionally may be required to relocate clinic equipment or patients.

Work Environment: The work is performed in an indoor clinical setting, which may involve exposure to contagious diseases and the hazards of automated office.

Employee will be required to sue protective clothing or gear such as mask and gloves for protection against infection. Standard safety precautions are routine. Major Duties:

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Patient Care 70% The duties and responsibilities of the Health Technician are varied and involve accomplishing both clinical and administrative tasks associated with the treatment and care of patients that present at a Specialty Care Clinics.

The incumbent serves as a clinical associate in the team and participates in the assessment of physical, functional, spiritual, and psychosocial planning needs of patients assigned in collaboration with the provider and/or care team.

Patient Care specific duties may include but are not limited to: 1. Makes observations and thoroughly documents care and the patient's response.

Appropriately seeks assistance and guidance by informing the appropriate medical provider of changes in the patient's condition requiring higher-level intervention. 2.

The Health Technician performs, reports, and records assigned nursing care in the Specialty Care Clinics 3.

Promptly recognizes urgent or emergent patient care situations, seeks assistance, and effectively performs supportive tasks as directed when appropriate. 4.

Based on the patient's goals, provides patient and family health education, after initiated by provider or Registered Nurse, to include self-management, prevention, and wellness.

Administrative Duties 30% Provides clerical and administrative support to the unit. Maintains patient's record/charts. Providers general clerical/administrative support coordination work for the unit.

Accurately enters order and/or consults as approved through Primary Care Outpatient Protocols.

Assists patients in contacting members of their Specialty Clinic team and/or navigating through the health care system.

Support clinical flow to include but not limited to scrubbing provider panel, communicating with Specialty Care Clinic/ Medical Support Assistance for scheduling needs, pre-appointment check-in and clinical reminder review.

Support completion of medical documentation through communication with Specialty Clinic Team team.

Documents appropriately in the veterans Electronic Health Record (EHR) meeting facility and VHA Directives. Uploads files/documents to patient's record.

Collects data from patient's records in preparation for patient appointment or in quality improvement initiatives.

Identifies inconsistencies or discrepancies among patients Electronic Health Record and alerts appropriate staff for corrective action.

Perform administrative tasks such as maintaining controls for specimens/tests and documenting results/measurements. Collects and organizes data from follow-up visits.

Assesses patient compliance with treatment plan. Documents compliance in EHR to communicate with provider.

Demonstrates professional behavior (i.e., respect, civility, ability to accept constructive criticism), effective communication and interpersonal skills.
