Job Description

Summary

This job involves assisting optometrists by performing vision tests, measuring eyesight, adjusting eyeglasses, and teaching patients about contact lenses in a military clinic at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado.

It's a hands-on role supporting eye care for service members and their families.

A good fit would be someone with entry-level experience in eye care or related education, who is detail-oriented and comfortable working with medical equipment.

About the Position: This position is located at Peterson AFB, Colorado.

This is a Direct Hire Solicitation Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Basic Requirements for Health Technician (Optometry): Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes operating optometry equipment; screening optometry patients for common ophthalmic emergencies; measuring patient visual acuity; and conducting various vision tests, such as color and depth perception tests.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).

OR Education: A half year (i.e., 9 semester hours) of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Optometry or Ophthalmology.

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 9.

Add the two percentages. Major Duties:

  • Measure patient visual acuities with and without glasses/contacts.
  • Utilize optometry equipment to conduct a variety of vision tests, such as tests for color vision or depth perception, or confrontation field tests.
  • Complete orders for eyewear using an automated system .
  • Conduct an automatic refraction to record result
  • Utilize optical tools and heating units to adjust or repair eyewear.
  • Perform limited maintenance or minor repair on optometry equipment, such as Autorefractor, Lensmeter, or other routine medical equipment.
  • Train new contact lens patients on insertion, removal, and care of contact lenses.
