Job Description

Summary

This job involves working as a health technician in a military hospital's labor, delivery, and surgical unit, helping with surgeries by preparing equipment, assisting doctors, and ensuring everything stays clean and safe.

About the Position: This position is with Tripler Army Medical Center (TAMC) in the Directorate of Nursing LDRP Unit in Honolulu, Hawaii. Tripler Army Medical Center is a tobacco-free workplace.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1) Assisting physicians with surgical procedures; 2) Arranging equipment and instruments to prepare sterile field while maintaining aseptic techniques; 3) Inspecting surgical supplies and restocking as needed; and 4) Disposing of soiled and/or contaminated materials post-procedure.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05). Major Duties:

  • Perform surgical technologist duties in support of the OB/GYN Service by providing support before, during, and after surgical procedures.
  • Select, assemble and organize required supplies, equipment and instruments for specific surgical procedure in accordance with operative work sheets, physician preference card and/or conferring with physician or charge nurse.
  • Assist with positioning and sterile draping of the patient and assuring patient safety, comfort, and integrity of plan of care are met.
  • Assist with the application of dressings.
  • Responsible for maintaining aseptic technique during the process of preparing for and assisting in the surgical procedure.
  • Transport patients from the hospital units to the operating room assuring the safe transportation of the patient.
  • Remove and dispose of soiled and/or contaminated materials such as changes linen, washes, disassembles, sterilizes and reassembles instruments.
  • In absence of housekeeping personnel cleans, disinfect furniture, floor and equipment in accordance with OSHA, TJC and AST standards of practice.
  • As part of the surgical team and management, replenishes sterile packs and general supplies and restocks shelves after taking stock level inventory.
  • Package, wrap, label, and issue surgical supplies and instrument sets used by wards and clinics for minor surgical procedures
  • Orient and train new civilian and military employees, perioperative and obstetrical nursing residents and surgical technologist students
