Summary

This job involves supporting patient care in a military medical center by screening patients, administering medications and immunizations, collecting vital signs and specimens, and managing appointments and clinic supplies.

Key Requirements

About the Position: This position is located in the Madigan Army Medical Center at Joint Base Lewis McChord, WA.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social).

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application.

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes direct patient care services administering immunizations and medications ordered by the health care providers; Collecting and recording patient vital signs data; utilizing electronic health record system to enter and retrieve patient information and schedule appointments.

This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).

OR Education: Four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree with a major study or at least 24 semester hours in subjects directly related to the position, (NOTE: You must attach a copy of your transcripts for verification).

OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%.

To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60.

Add the two percentages.

**A Certified Clinical Medical Assistant Certification or a Registered Medical Assistant Certification is required.** **All Health Care Providers must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) Training and certification that is sponsored or endorsed by the American Heart Association (AHA).

Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.** Major Duties:

  • Conduct patient screening for the Privileged Provider, documenting the chief complaint and obtaining complete vital signs, height, and weight.
  • Apply and remove bandages, binders, basic dressings, and hot or cold therapy packs.
  • Administer medications subcutaneously, intramuscular, intradermal, and screen and administer standard immunizations in accordance with established protocols.
  • Collect specimens, perform urine dipstick testing and blood glucose finger sticks, and enter laboratory requests into the automated system.
  • Schedule appointment with the appropriate clinic and health care provider dependent on patient disposition, complaint or symptoms or services requested.
  • Initiate work orders, and restock supplies required to support patient care and maintain clinic operations.
  • Maintain waiting areas in a clean, orderly condition and provide orientation for Red Cross volunteers and newly assigned personnel.
  • Ensure appointments are timely and in accordance with physician's request and explain reasons for delays in giving timely appointments due to shortages of personnel or other circumstances.
