Basic Qualifications: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position.

This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained.

Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GS-14 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level, which must include the following experience: conducting laboratory regulatory compliance activities for the use of diagnostic tests; organizing laboratory scientific information to support national infectious disease laboratory initiatives; collaborating with other offices, programs or organizations to obtain information pertaining to study plans, validation data, and intended use; and analyzing laboratory tests to ensure that its quality meets general and regulatory requirements.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Major Duties:

As a Health Scientist you will: Participate in the formulation of goals, objectives and broad operating policies related to the full scope of the infectious diseases (ID)'s laboratory programs.

Ensure regulatory and control work that involves testing are consistent with standards of accreditation of laboratories.

Manage studies or issues which are considered to be complex in nature in terms of scientific or technical implications and participate in the design, planning and development of scientific laboratory projects and programs.

Advise on scientific quality assurance programs, laboratory safety, procedures, protocols, special reviews, and monitors other program procedures related to ensuring quality science in research activities.

Lead highly visible mission-oriented assessments, monitor regulatory compliance, and/or survey studies that are focused on goals, objectives, strategies, and/or multifaceted, processes and procedures.
