Job Description

Summary

This entry-level health physicist role in the U.S.

Navy involves monitoring radiation safety at a naval shipyard, analyzing samples for radioactive materials, and ensuring workers are protected from exposure.

It includes using computers to track data and investigating how personnel might come into contact with radiation.

A good fit would be someone with a background in physics or related sciences who is detail-oriented and interested in environmental and worker safety.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in health physics, physics, or a related field meeting OPM basic education requirements
  • For GS-07: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-05, including assessing radiological issues, collecting data/samples, and preparing reports

Full Job Description

You will serve as a HEALTH PHYSICIST in the RADIATION HEALTH DIVISION OF THE RADIOLOGICAL CONTROL OFFICE of PSNS and IMF.

Salary: GS-05: $45,785 - 59,521 GS-07: $56,715 - 73,731 For GS-07: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: As a professional health physicist assessing and assisting with radiological issues, the collection of data or samples, and the preparation of reports for radiation health programs.

For GS-05: Applicants who meet basic education requirements for this position are fully qualified for the GS-05 grade level.

  • You will use and develop computer programs related to health physics.
  • You will conduct personnel dosimetry investigations to determine personnel exposures, evaluate results, and recommend improvements.
  • You will evaluate basic radiation survey data to determine radiation hazards and compliance with established radiation exposure requirements.
  • You will perform analyses to determine radionuclide identification and quantity in a variety of samples such as mud, water, air, waste material, work areas and the human body.
