Job Description

Summary

This job involves working as a health physicist in a naval radiological control office in Japan, where you'll inspect radiation safety in propulsion plants and other programs, analyze data, prepare reports, and develop equipment procedures to ensure compliance and safety.

It's ideal for someone with experience in radiation health who enjoys hands-on inspections, problem-solving on special projects, and collaborating in a military environment.

Note that medical and dental care is very limited in Japan, so it's best for those prepared for overseas living.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in health physics, physics, or related field (meets Basic Requirements per OPM standards)
  • For GS-12: At least one year of specialized experience at GS-11 level, including preparing reports, evaluating/analyzing/inspecting/consulting/developing/implementing radioactive data and equipment for propulsion plants and programs like industrial radiation health or medical assessments
  • For GS-11: At least one year of specialized experience at GS-9 level, including evaluating/analyzing/inspecting/consulting on radioactive data and equipment for propulsion plants and related programs
  • Ability to conduct inspections and surveillances for compliance with radiation safety requirements and recommend corrective actions
  • Skills in preparing and evaluating reports on investigations, analyses, and surveys to assess and recommend program changes
  • Experience working on special health physics projects, from practical problems to applied research
  • Proficiency in developing calibration procedures, performing equipment calibrations, and recommending improvements to radiation health operations

Please see Additional Information section below.*** You will serve as a HEALTH PHYSICIST in the RADIATION HEALTH DIVISION, RADIOLOGICAL CONTROL OFFICE in the Yokosuka Detachment of PSNS and IMF.

FOR GS-12: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: preparing reports, evaluating, analyzing, inspecting, consulting, developing, and implementing radioactive data and equipment for propulsion plant program and other programs (e.g Industrial Radiation Health, medical health physics assessments, and special health physics projects).

  • You will conduct inspections and surveillances of operations performed by other organizations to determine compliance with requirements, and determine and recommend appropriate corrective action concerning deficiencies identified.
  • You will prepare and evaluate reports of investigations, analyses, and surveys to provide assessments, conclusions, and recommendations of program changes/modifications to fulfill the objectives of the Radiation Health Division.
  • You will work jointly or independently on special health physics projects which range both in complexity and scope from practical problems to projects involving applied research.
  • You will develop calibration procedures, perform calibrations of the equipment, evaluate the necessity for and recommend additional equipment/facilities to improve the effectiveness of Radiation Health Division operations.
