Full Job Description

The position is assigned to the Business Office of the VA Eastern Kansas Health Care System and performs a broad range of administrative duties to support Patient Benefits and registration and intake activities within the Medical Center.

This includes supporting the business unit that administers health and related benefits within an integrated system of VA health care resources and health care access points.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 01/20/2026.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: GS-5 Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.

Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Experience using computer systems and databases with multiple automated programs and software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Power Point.

Ability to review documents for accuracy. Experience providing clerical support in a medical environment.. OR, Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience.

To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have successfully completed four (4) years above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite.

(TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.

One year of fulltime academic study is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in a college or university, or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial, or technical school.

OR, Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level.

You must have an combination of specialized experience and education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement.

One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.

GS-6 Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization.

Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Experience using computer systems and databases with multiple automated programs and software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, Power Point.

Ability to review documents for accuracy. Experience providing clerical support in a medical environment.

Major Duties:

Duties may include but are not limited to: Patient Benefits Program Support Clinic Scheduling Administrative Support Decedent Affairs Personal Funds of Patients (PFOP) Duties Assists in other areas such as Personal Funds of Patients, basic Medical Cost Care Fund functions(MCCFF), National Registry Data input, and financial technician functions.

Employee serves as the initial contact for employees, applicants, Veterans, and others requesting program information and services.

Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met.

Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:30pm Virtual: This is not a virtual position.
