The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting

for a Habitat Biologist 3 located in Douglas, Alaska!


What You Will be Doing:

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish, Research and Technical Services, is recruiting for a permanent full-time Habitat Biologist 3 position located in Douglas, Alaska with fieldwork primarily throughout Southeast Alaska.

This position will manage and conduct hydrologic investigations to provide science based information and recommendations to support fish habitat protection.

The incumbent will install and maintain streamgages and perform stream discharge measurements.

The incumbent will complete and maintain field data and office records, and will use hydrologic database to enter, process, and archive hydrologic records.

They will administer and maintain the WISKI hydrologic database and train other staff in its use.

Additional duties include grant writing and administration, logistical planning, budgeting, and preparing reports (operational plans, fisheries data series reports, etc.). The incumbent will supervise a Habitat Biologist 2.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:

The position will be based in Douglas and while mostly an office job, periodic field work and routine travel is expected. You’ll be working with 5 other staff members in the program that are located in Anchorage and Douglas.

The position requires field work which is usually scheduled with advanced notice and typically occurs during the normal work week.

Travel includes intermittent/short duration fieldwork (1 to 3 days at a time) year round.

Field data collection provides opportunities to see remote parts of Alaska where accommodations range from camping to bunkhouses to village lodging or cabins.

The work requires good manual dexterity, coordination, and stamina, safe equipment operation skills, and willingness to work under inclement weather conditions as environmental conditions can change frequently.

In the field, the incumbent may be working directly from a boat or wading in a rocky and slippery stream in urban or remote settings.

The Douglas Fish and Game Office is just across Gastineau Channel from downtown Juneau.

The office supports research and management personnel from the Sport Fish, Commercial Fisheries, Wildlife Conservation, and Subsistence divisions, and Habitat section; which allows for the opportunity to develop professional relationships with a diversity of other resource professionals.

The position requires an ability to work independently but also within a team environment collaborating with staff in the Division of Sport Fish as well as regional and area offices.

Requires frequent travel within the state and the ability to perform field work in remote areas, with and inclement weather and wildlife, throughout the year. Travel to remote sites may include use of: small boats, small planes, helicopters, and/or walking over uneven and challenging terrain.


Who We Are Looking For:

We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:

  • Extensive knowledge of Alaska fish species, life histories, and their preferred habitat suitability requirements.
  • An understanding of surface water data collection, rating curve development, and mean daily flow record processing.
  • An understanding of hydropower impacts on fish resources and the FERC licensing process.
  • The ability to perform field work in remote areas and inclement weather throughout the year.
  • The ideal incumbent possesses strong organizational, attention to detail, and written and verbal communication skills.

Special Note:
A valid driver's license is required.

This position may be in possession of, or have access to, firearms/ammunition.

First Aid/CPR training is required for working in the field.
Wildlife Safety Training

Requirements

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management;
AND
One year of full performance professional level biologist experience. The required professional biologist work experience is met by service as a Fishery Biologist 2, Wildlife Biologist 2, Habitat Biologist 2, or Fisheries Geneticist 1 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent with another employer.

Substitution:
A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:
• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and
• at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.

Special Note: 
"Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced. Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills. Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.

Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.
