Key Requirements

  • No prior professional experience required
  • Ability to assist with traffic impact analysis, roadway safety studies, and capacity analysis using tools like Synchro and SimTraffic
  • Proficiency in preparing reports, technical documentation, and reviewing designs for roadways, signing, striping, and work zones
  • Willingness to participate in field investigations, site visits, data collection, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams
  • Comfort with walking on rough surfaces during on-site inspections; position is subject to random drug testing as a safety impact role

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Houston Public Works, Office of the City Engineer is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Graduate Engineer to join our Traffic Engineering team at the Houston Permitting Center.

This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate or early-career professional with a strong interest in traffic operations and public infrastructure.

As part of our team, you will work on a variety of traffic engineering reviews, supporting senior engineers in the review, analysis, and implementation of traffic solutions that enhance safety, efficiency, and mobility.

Investigates and responds to inquiries from technical personnel and the general public on design criteria and project specifications.

Coordinate with customers, consultants, agencies and city officials.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Assist with traffic impact analysis studies and roadway safety analysis
  • Capacity analysis using industry-standard software (e.g., Synchro, SimTraffic)
  • Prepare reports and technical documentation for internal and public use
  • Support the review of roadway geometric designs, signing/striping plans, and work zone traffic control plans
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams on transportation planning, design and operation.
  • Participate in field investigations, site visits, and data collection as needed

WORKING CONDITIONS
This position is physically comfortable; the individual has discretion about walking, standing, etc. May require walking on rough surfaces during on-site inspections and investigations.

This is a Houston Public Works Engineering Emergency Management position at the Tier II Level.

Requirements

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Requires Bachelor's degree in Engineering that is approved by the State Board of Registration for Professional Engineers with a satisfactory standing;
OR

Requires graduation from an engineering or related science curriculum at a recognized institution of higher education, other than a curriculum approved by the Board and passage of the eight hour fundamentals of engineering examination prescribed by the Board;
OR

Possession of a valid Engineering-in-Training Certificate issued by the Board under the current requirements of the Texas Engineering Practice Act.
