The Contra Costa County Department of Agriculture is recruiting to fill one (1) Glassy-Winged Sharpshooter Specialist – Project vacancy.

The Glassy – Winged Sharpshooter Specialist is distinguished from the Pest Detection Specialist class in that they are routinely involved in the inspection of nursery stock at wholesale and retail nursery establishments.

They are distinguished from the Agricultural Biologist series in that they are not State licensed and do not inspect quarantine plants and goods.

Positions are seasonal and dependent on State contract funds.

Incumbents may be exposed to chemicals, plant/animal diseases, poison oak, chemical and agricultural odors, and various weather conditions and climates.

Requirements

  • Inspects nursery stock shipments for the presence of Glassy – Winged Sharpshooter life stages
  • Identifies basic landscape plants that are hosts of Glassy-winged Sharpshooter
  • Identifies specific target pests that are caught in detection traps
  • Organizes daily stops in an efficient driving route
  • Draws neat and accurate maps of trap locations
  • Keeps legible records and prepares reports of work accomplished
  • Deploys and services insect detection traps according to State guidelines
  • Interacts with property owners and co-workers in a tactful and professional manner
  • Operates assigned vehicles and works in a safe and courteous way
  • Manages time efficiently to complete daily tasks
  • Does other work as required

Qualifications

License Required: Possession of a Valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's Licenses.

Education: Possession of a high school diploma, G.E.D. equivalency or a high school proficiency certificate.
