Summary

This job involves maintaining and repairing buildings, vehicles, equipment, and fire training props at the South Carolina Fire Academy to keep everything safe and functional.

Responsibilities

  • You will perform preventative maintenance and repairs to buildings and firefighting training props at the South Carolina Fire Academy.
  • You will perform preventative maintenance and repairs to state vehicles, trailers, lawn equipment, and HVAC units to ensure they are in working condition and ready to use.
  • You will perform preventative maintenance and make repairs to plumbing fixtures, gas burn units, controls used in water heaters, sheet rock, electronical fixtures, and drains.
  • You will weld, cut, thread and assemble pipe for water and flammable liquids to ensure training equipment and props are in good working condition and ready to use.
  • You perform additional maintenance duties such as performing renovations and installing new equipment in buildings and fire training props and providing help and guidance to temporary employees assigned to work on the building and grounds team.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Trades’ experience that is directly related to the area of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

  • A high school diploma, a Universal Certification in refrigerant recovery and two (2) years of trade experience.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and 10-year MVR that complies with State and Agency Fleet guidelines.
  • Knowledge and ability to use tools, equipment, materials, and supplies used in various trades.
  • Ability to use judgment and initiative to complete routine work without constant supervision.
  • Skills to make emergency and general repairs to buildings, equipment, and appliances.
  • Knowledge and skills in HVAC equipment and shall be certified and maintain certification in refrigerant recovery.
  • Knowledge in electricity and knowledge with electrical controls is preferred.

Other Requirements

  • Must be able to lift at least 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to climb and use a variety of ladders.
  • May be required to work in noisy and smoky environments.
  • Will be required to perform on-call duty. May have to work some weekends and holidays.
