Job Description

Summary

This job involves working as a forestry technician focused on preventing and fighting wildfires on military forestlands in North Carolina, including leading fire suppression efforts, operating equipment, and managing controlled burns to reduce fire risks.

A good fit would be someone with hands-on experience in land management, fire control, or conservation work, who is comfortable working outdoors in challenging conditions and leading small teams during emergencies.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience at GS-07 level (for GS-08) or GS-06 level (for GS-07) in wildland fire suppression, prescribed fire, or hazardous fuels treatment
  • Experience in forestry aid/technician roles or related fields like engineering, range, soil conservation, farming, or ranching with knowledge of land management practices
  • Ability to provide oversight and direct fireline activities, including assigning missions to ground and aviation resources during initial and extended attack fires
  • Knowledge of fire weather, fuel moisture, fire danger indices, and ability to recognize hazardous situations and deliver operational briefings
  • Proficiency in operating wildland fire engines and functioning as a Strike Team Leader for heavy equipment
  • Experience planning and implementing prescribed burning programs on large forestland areas (e.g., 15,000 acres annually)
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to meet physical demands of outdoor fire suppression work

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Major Duties:

  • You will work as a fire control technician with responsibility for the protection of forestland used for military training activities.
  • You will provide oversight during initial and extended attack fires, direct fireline activities and tactics of dispersed firefighters, resources and equipment and assign missions to ground and aviation wildland fire suppression resources.
  • You will be responsible for maintaining and understanding a daily awareness of fire weather, fuel moisture contents, and fire danger indices, recognizing potentially hazardous situations, and providing operational briefings.
  • You will operate a wildland fire engine, function as a Strike Team Leader Heavy Equipment (STEQ) and plan and implement an aggressive prescribed burning program on approximately 15,000 acres of commercial forestland, ranges and impact areas annually.
  • You will keep the Program Manager informed of mechanical issues and repairs to heavy equipment, obtain cost estimates for repairs and ensure preventative maintenance and minor repairs are completed and accomplished in a safe manner.
  • You will maintain habitat for the red-cockaded woodpecker and implement all phases of the insect and disease management program.
