Why it's a great opportunity: The Pierce County Summer Internship Program is back! This year, our program will run from 6/8/2026 through 8/28/2026.

We are excited to offer opportunities that provide realistic and meaningful work experiences, while providing Pierce County Departments with interns who bring fresh perspectives and support to complete special projects.

Interns are a part of a cohort that attend weekly activities together.

These sessions include classes, project planning, and tours of various departments and facilities to learn about the County and the types of great job opportunities we offer.

As a cohort, you will be responsible for a culminating group presentation before the Pierce County Council.

About the internship: For this role you should be an intern with a strong desire to work in automotive repair and fleet maintenance.

The desire to learn, be self-motivated, inquisitive, and greatly expand your knowledge will be the best approach. This will be much more than basic maintenance with a full bumper to bumper approach.

You will work one on one with several highly skilled automotive technicians providing mentorship, feedback, and guidance.

You will learn the proper use of tools, knowledge, and computer systems in areas such as gas and diesel engines, brake systems, electrical systems, suspension/steering systems, HVAC systems, operations, diagnosis, and repairs.

You will learn how and why safety around cars, tools, and potentially hazardous materials is so important.

How to be successful in the role: Your success will come from the determination you have set on making this your career path, exposure to a wide range of vehicles and repair techniques, and your current education and experience.

Core daily responsibilities:

  • Work with a mentor one on one while being inquisitive and knowing your own limitations.
  • Hands-on engagement of all areas of the industry.
  • Assist in diagnostic, maintenance, repair, and equipment installations.
  • Assist in computer system updates for work orders, maintenance tracking, and diagnostics.
  • Determine priority of work based on the work to be done.

Qualifications

  • A cover letter is required for consideration. Without one, you will not be considered.
  • Must be local 6/8/2026 – 8/28/2026 to attend in-person cohort meetings, activities, and any work-related tasks.
  • Must be at least 18 years old as of 6/8/2026.
  • Current or past education in automotive trades.
  • Proficiency with computers and good computer skills.
  • Proficiency with basic hand tools.
  • All tools will be provided for the intern. You will not need to bring your own.
