The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting

for a Fishery Biologist 1 located in Cordova, Alaska!

What You Will Be Doing:

This position will be coordinating logistics for the Prince William Sound and Copper River field camps, assisting in achieving project goals connected to management of salmon fisheries, salmon enumeration and data entry into databases.

This position will also assist with fixed wing aerial surveys, fish ticket QA/QC and sonar size apportionment. This position runs from May 1 - September 14.

This position plays a critical role in collecting daily escapement numbers that area managers use to guide fishing openings and closures. Data collected by this position will be used to better provide sustainable and efficient fishing opportunities.

This position will allow the incumbent to gain experience and a diverse skill set working with a variety commercial fisheries stock assessment projects necessary for sustainable Alaska fisheries, including resistance board and picket weirs, catch and escapement sampling, and ARIS sonar, while also learning how to deal with all of the logistical challenges of executing projects across broad geographic regions.

This in combination with learning the administrative aspects of the job such as budget management, hiring, procurement, report writing, data management and analysis will allow the incumbent to gain all the necessary skills to comfortably step into higher level biologist positions in the future.

This position includes overtime as well as state benefits.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:

This position is stationed in Cordova, and the schedule will be variable including weekends, nights and overtime.

The incumbent will frequently travel to remote field camps for setup, camp breakdown, and resupply trips. Travel to remote field camps is primarily by float plane or boat.

The position will assist with catch sampling as needed which occurs in the fish processing facilities.

The remainder of the time will be spent in the office performing daily data entry, fish ticket QA/QC, sonar size apportionment and procuring supplies for field camps.

On occasion the incumbent may be asked to fly aerial surveys via a small, fixed wing aircraft.

Who We Are Looking For:

We are looking for an individual with the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

• A working knowledge of working remote Alaskan fisheries assessment projects, with experience with installation, maintenance, removal and the coordination of logistics with fish weirs and/or sonar enumeration operations.

• Knowledge of Pacific salmon biology and fisheries and ability to identify ocean bright Pacific salmon.

• Good communication skills: strong oral and written communication skills for diverse groups ranging from local fishery groups to scientific audiences.

• Strong organization skills and data management experience. Working experience entering data querying and error checking databases, creating pivot tables, table and graphs using spreadsheets and word processing applications in Microsoft Word and Excel.

• Ability to learn new applications and databases.

Requirements

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, fisheries science, or natural resource management.

Substitution:

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college that includes or is supplemented by the following credit hours will substitute for the degree in a specific field:

• at least 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) in biology, a branch of biology, limnology, biometrics, oceanography, forestry, aquaculture, aquatic ecology, fisheries resources, or natural resource management (excluding courses that focus on agricultural husbandry techniques, human population dynamics, or the design and manipulation of landscapes), of which 16 semester hours (24 quarter hours) are upper division courses; and

• at least 12 semester hours (16 quarter hours) in any combination of two or more of the following: chemistry, physics, mathematics, statistics, geology, hydrology, or GIS.

Special Note:

"Upper division courses" means courses that are specialized, in-depth and advanced.

Such courses emphasize problem-solving, analytical thinking skills, and theoretical applications, with depth and rigor in a discipline's theories and methods; specialization in a particular field or profession; refinement of general education; and/or development of specific intellectual and professional skills.

Upper division courses are commonly identified in college catalogs as 300 level and higher.

Some positions may require training in specialized areas such as hydroacoustics, microscopic analysis, underwater research, or fish habitat restoration or enhancement.

An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required bachelor's degree within six months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.
