Job Description

Summary

This job involves leading surveys, research, and management efforts to protect and improve fish populations in South Carolina's Region 3, while also helping private pond owners with fish care and water quality advice.

The role includes sharing findings through reports and talks, coordinating with other agencies, and educating the public about fisheries conservation.

Full Job Description

This employee will be tasked with conducting biological survey, research and development activities of the fisheries resources in Region 3.

Job Duties Include:
  • Designing, planning, and executing survey, research and development projects directed toward the development, protection and enhancement of the Region's fisheries resources.
  • Disseminating information through reports, technical journals, and oral presentations.
  • Providing technical assistance to private pond owners by providing water quality testing, fish stocking information, fish population management recommendations, and/or nuisance aquatic plant identification and control recommendations.
  • Maintaining effective coordination and communication with DNR staff and any other state, federal or local agencies to execute the goals and objectives of the Fisheries Section.
  • Conveying objectives and functions of the Fisheries Section to the public.
  • Participating in/conducting outreach activities with government or private organizations/groups to promote the goals and mission of the SCDNR Fisheries Section.
  • Investigating fish kills in public waters and commenting, if applicable, to any environmental review permits that may impact public aquatic systems within Region 3.
  • Maintaining department issued equipment.

Requirements

A master's degree in biology, chemistry or wildlife management and two (2) years of experience in fish, wildlife or marine management or research programs; or a bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, wildlife management or related technical area and four (4) years of experience in fish, wildlife or marine management or research programs.

Qualifications

Advanced knowledge of aquatic biotic processes. Knowledge of fisheries management principles, practices and techniques. Experience in the development and implementation of fisheries survey and management plans. Proficient in the use of MS Office software (e.g., Word and Excel) and statistical software (e.g., R and SAS) to compile, analyze and report project results. Ability to disseminate project results to the public and peers in writing and via oral presentations.
