Full Job Description

This position is open to ALL APPLICANTS.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting for a

Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 (Sonar Technician) located in Bethel!

What you will be doing:
This position is part of a field crew that will install, operate, and remove a sonar camp that estimates salmon passage in the Kuskokwim River from approximately May 21 through August 31. Daily sonar operations include intense physical labor working from, operating, and maintaining 16-24 foot outboard-powered skiffs and processing hydroacoustic data between approximately 10 days of physically demanding camp setup and training and 5 days of physically demanding camp breakdown. Remote field camp responsibilities include sharing camp chores and cooking while maintaining a working relationship in a shared living environment.

Our mission, values, and culture:

The mission of the Division of Commercial Fisheries is to manage subsistence, commercial, and personal use fisheries in the interest of the economy and general well-being of the citizens of the state, consistent with the sustained yield principle, and subject to allocations through public regulatory processes.

The Alaska Department of Fish & Game strives for a diverse and inclusive workforce where safety and wellbeing are paramount and employees at all levels promote a culture where everyone is valued, treated equitably, and treated respectfully.

Benefits of joining our team:
This position plays a critical role in providing daily estimates of abundance of all fish species migrating upriver in the Kuskokwim River for area managers to guide fishing openings and closures. Data collected by this position will be used to better provide sustainable fishing opportunities for nearly 4,000 area households.

Sonar operations include some of the most diverse field work experience and represent the cutting edge of fish enumeration methods. This position includes overtime, one of the State’s highest pay scales, intermittent access to showers and laundry, intermittent time off, and there may be opportunities as desired for cross-training with other State fisheries programs.

The working environment you can expect:
The sonar site is located 4 miles upriver from the community of Bethel among the dense willow thickets of a Western Alaska coastal floodplain (with moderate, weather-dependent, mosquito presence and dust). Start-up and breakdown tasks include long physical labor days with no time off. Daily work is primarily split between 4 hours of test fishing from a 22-foot outboard skiff in a slow, turbid river (i.e. challenging physical labor) and 3.5 hours of computer-based sonar enumeration and data entry in a heated tent. Weather ranges from rain and wind in the mid to upper 30s to calm and sunny in the mid-80 degrees.

Who we are looking for:
We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:
  • Ability to work and live in remote Alaskan outdoors while living in close quarters with co-workers.
  • Experience in the use of drift gillnets to capture and collect biological data from adult salmon.
  • Experience safely operating and maintaining outboard skiffs.
