Job Description

Summary

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting

for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 (Stream Survey Crew Member) located in Homer, Alaska!


What You Will Be Doing:

This position will work under the direction of a FWT3 crew leader collecting salmon escapement data from ten index streams on the lower Kenai Peninsula.

This involves daily trips to remote rivers and streams where significant salmon runs occur.

Wearing chest waders, the technicians will survey those salmon runs and estimate the number of fish in those systems.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:

This position is based out of the Homer field office with a typical season running from early July through mid-September.

Daily work assignments may include, but are not limited to: operating a skiff in marine environments, flying in small float planes to remote survey sites, and hiking up pristine streams and rivers in the remote backcountry of Alaska to count salmon.

Black bears are frequently encountered, and occasionally brown bears. In addition, you may be providing assistance to other department staff in the sampling of commercial salmon harvests.

This will occur on the fishing grounds or in processors where measurements are taken and biological structures may be collected for stock identification or aging.

The incumbent in this position will be responsible for assisting in the upkeep and maintenance of the aluminum skiffs used on these projects.

This position had a modest amount of data entry and survey documentation associated with it.


Who We Are Looking For:

We are looking for a candidate that possesses some or all of the following position-specific competencies (If you have any experience with the following, please document these in your application.)

  • Good physical condition and stamina. The ability to work productively in the remote wilderness of Alaska.

  • The ability to differentiate the five species of salmon in their natural environment.

  • The ability to estimate consistently the numbers of salmon present in streams and rivers.

  • The ability to plan and manage time on the ground when deployed so that all tasks are accomplished.

  • Demonstrated ability and familiarity with field projects including: working outdoors in poor weather, working around bears, hiking and working in/around cold flowing waters, operating a skiff in open marine waters, and engineering solutions to problems encountered in the field.

    Experience and proficiency with 12 GA shotguns for bear protection is desired. Attention to safety is of utmost importance.

    Special Note:
    A valid driver's license is required.

    This position may be in possession of, or have access to, firearms/ammunition.


    The following are recommended under the State SOP manual, but are not required by law:
    Current certification in First Aid/CPR.
    Periodic attendance at Firearms/Bear Safety Training.

    Requirements

    High school graduation or the equivalent.
    OR
    Three months as an entry level fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 1.
    OR
    Six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory.

    Special Requirements:
    Exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals may occur. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Some duties may be restricted for employees under the age of 18 in accordance with State and federal child labor laws. Positions are seasonal or temporary.

    Special Note:
    "High school diploma equivalent" means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.

    An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required high school diploma or equivalent within three months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.
