Job Description

Summary

This job involves working at seafood processing plants in Ketchikan, Alaska, to collect data on fish catches by interviewing fishermen, sampling salmon and shellfish, and entering information into computer apps.

It's hands-on work in tough, wet conditions to help manage Alaska's commercial fisheries sustainably.

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting

for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 located in Ketchikan, Alaska!


What You Will Be Doing:

Fish and Wildlife Technician 2s collect biological and catch effort data from commercially harvested salmon and shellfish but may also sample groundfish depending on fishery dynamics.

This position is stationed in Ketchikan, Alaska and data collection is conducted at local commercial seafood processors.

The person(s) filling this position will be responsible for interviewing permit holders and recording confidential information, collecting biological data, identifying all five species of pacific salmon in their ocean bright condition, and recording all information in applications housed on a ruggedized computer tablet.

This port sampling position assists in the collection of biological and catch effort data from commercial salmon landings for: coded wire tags, fishery performance data, pink sex ratios, age-length data, genetic samples, and other biological data as directed.


The information collected by port samplers is used directly to manage the salmon fisheries within the State, and as part of Pacific Salmon Treaty obligations, is considered the foundation on which salmon management in Southeast Alaska is built.

This position is considered entry level and many of the current biologists and managers started their career as port samplers within the Department of Fish and Game.


The Working Environment You Can Expect:

Port sampling work is performed on-site within Ketchikan’s commercial seafood processing plants, where working conditions are often cold, wet, slippery, and exposed to weather.

Numerous sampling programs are involved, and several different data collection applications must be filled out correctly. Attention to detail is a requirement.

  • Ability to repetitively lift, push or pull fish and gear up to 50 pounds, and at times, stand in one place for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work on docks and in processers in cold, windy, wet and slippery conditions.
  • Ability to work in loud conditions around moving machines, forklifts, and people.
  • Requires exposure to fish blood and viscera, pathogens, and sharp implements.
  • Requires the ability to work irregular hours, possibly early mornings and late evenings..


Who We Are Looking For:

We are interested in candidates who possess some or all of the following position specific competencies:

  • Oral and Written Communication: Expresses information to individuals or groups effectively, considering the audience and nature of the information (for example, speaking to a fisher versus a coworker); listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.

  • Fishery Biology: General knowledge of salmon fishery dynamics in Southeast Alaska, with the ability to identify the 5 Pacific salmon species in ocean bright condition.

  • Computer Skills: Experience using computers/tablets and Microsoft Office applications (i.e. Word, Excel).

  • Attention to Detail: Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.

  • Adaptability: Willingness to work a flexible schedule dependent on commercial fishing closures and openers.

Requirements

High school graduation or the equivalent.
OR
Three months as an entry level fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 1.
OR
Six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory.

Special Requirements:
Exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals may occur. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Some duties may be restricted for employees under the age of 18 in accordance with State and federal child labor laws. Positions are seasonal or temporary.

Special Note:
"High school diploma equivalent" means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.

An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required high school diploma or equivalent within three months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.
