The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Wildlife Conservation is recruiting

for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 3/4 located in Kodiak, Alaska!


What You Will Be Doing:

This position is in Kodiak and performs technician level duties for wildlife and sport fish management activities (e.g., assisting with surveys, captures, and data collection) and public information desk needs (e.g., issue hunt/fish permits, answer questions from public) in Game Management Unit (GMU) 8.

This is a permanent seasonal position, working 11 months of the year.

Typically, the unfunded month is mid-winter and the individual would be on seasonal leave without pay during this time.This position works closely with the Wildlife and Sportfish Area Biologists, Assistant Area Biologists, and other technicians, as well as a shared Program Technician.

This work group manages wildlife populations and sport fisheries and participates in a diverse array of wildlife and fisheries projects and public processes.

Under the direct supervision of the Area Biologists, this position supports the shared public information desk in the Kodiak office and wildlife and sportfish management projects in GMU 8.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:

The position is located in the City of Kodiak on Kodiak Island.

Primary responsibilities include answering public questions in-person, by email, and by phone, sealing harvested wildlife, and issuing logbooks, licenses and tags.

It assists with monitoring and evaluating wildlife populations, including deer, caribou, mountain goat, brown bear, furbearers, and small game.

It also assists with monitoring and research projects with Pacific salmon species, rainbow trout, steelhead and rockfish species.

This position will also assist with conducting aerial surveys for brown bear, caribou, Roosevelt elk, and mountain goats.

Use of electronic databases and assisting with GIS and spatial analysis and programs for creating public outreach materials.


Who We Are Looking For:

We are looking for an individual with the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Experience working in a public information or customer service field, with strong oral communication skills and the ability to deal effectively with frustrated or confused individuals.
  • Experience using computers and computer software, especially Microsoft Word and Excel, to conduct routine biological data entry, simple analysis or output.
  • Experience working with large animals or responding to nuisance animal situations.
  • Experience in small single-engine fixed-wing aircraft maneuvering less than 1,000 feet above ground level.
  • Field experience collecting biological data, handling wildlife and fish, and maintaining equipment.
  • Knowledge of the Kodiak Archipelago, the flora and fauna that exist there, and the associated hunting and sport fishing regulations.

Valid driver´s license is required.

Requirements

Fish and Wildlife Technician 3
High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
Six months experience at the developmental level of fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 2.
OR
One year of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher, guide, or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.

Substitutions:
An additional six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory may substitute for the high school graduation or equivalent.
Bachelor of Science degree in fisheries, wildlife, or habitat protection may substitute for a maximum of two years of technical laboratory or field experience, involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection.

Special Requirements:
Work may involve exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Positions are seasonal or temporary.

Special Note:
"High school diploma equivalent" means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.

Fields of study comparable to fisheries, wildlife or habitat protection include aquaculture, biology, ichthyology, microbiology, ornithology, and zoology.

Fish and Wildlife Technician 4
High school graduation or the equivalent.
AND
One year of experience as a journey level fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 3.
OR
Four years of technical laboratory and/or field experience involving fish or wildlife research, management, or habitat protection; as a commercial fisher, guide, or trapper; or a subsistence hunter or fisher.

Flexible Staffing
