The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Sport Fish is recruiting for a Fish and Wildlife Technician 2 located in Glennallen!
What you will be doing: This position serves as a member of a two-person crew that enumerates Chinook and sockeye salmon using sonar in the Gulkana River from June 1 through July 15. This position requires working every day over the 6 week time period, ensuring continuous recording and review of Chinook salmon sonar files. Sonar file processing will follow established procedures and is a large component of this job.

The primary responsibility of this position is to collect salmon escapement data that is used in fisheries management decisions. The information that is gathered from this project is essential to the management of the Copper River commercial, sport, personal use, and subsistence salmon fisheries.

The working environment you can expect: The majority of the work takes place outdoors near the community of Gulkana, which is approximately 0.5 hours North of Glennallen by highway vehicle. Food and lodging in a tent will be provided while on the Gulkana River. Exposure to dust, silt, biting insects, and inclement weather is common. This position requires the flexibility to change work schedules with little notice, and often requires working early mornings, nights, weekends, and/or holidays shifts. Daily activities include maintaining generators, adjusting sonar beam, reviewing sonar files, sampling procedures; and editing, organizing, and recording data. Requires working outdoors where exposure to dust, silt, biting insects, and inclement weather is common. Requires a range of physical flexibility and the ability to occasionally lift, pull, push, and/or carry heavy objects weighing up to 100 lbs.

•Ability to communicate effectively with biologist and convey sampling information;
• Ability to follow detailed sampling and computer data entry protocols;
• Ability to conduct biological sampling of fish or wildlife;
• Interest in fisheries research/management or natural sciences; and
• Experience living in close quarters with others in a cooperative and helpful manner.

CPR/First Aid Certification: Training will be provided by the department at no cost to the employee.
Requirements
High school graduation or the equivalent.
OR
Three months as an entry level fish and wildlife technician or aide. With the State of Alaska, this experience is equivalent to Fish and Wildlife Technician 1.
OR
Six months of work experience involving fish, wildlife, outdoor manual labor, or in a laboratory.
Special Requirements:Exposure to animals, insects, inclement weather, low level flying, travel by boat or skiff, or contact with drugs and chemicals may occur. Housing may consist of bunkhouses, vessels, or wall tents. Some duties may be restricted for employees under the age of 18 in accordance with State and federal child labor laws. Positions are seasonal or temporary.
Special Note:"High school diploma equivalent" means one of the following: 1) a GED (general educational development); 2) completion of any basic adult education course equivalent to 480 class hours (16 weeks at 30 course hours per week); 3) acceptance in full standing by an accredited college or university; or 4) highest grade of school completed plus an amount of paid or volunteer experience that totals 12 years.
An individual who will complete the educational requirements and obtain the required high school diploma or equivalent within three months may apply and be considered for a vacancy. Such applicants may be given a conditional job offer but may not be appointed until receipt of the required degree has been documented.
