The Alaska Department of Fish and Game, Division of Commercial Fisheries is recruiting

for a Fish and Game Program Technician located in Craig, Alaska!

What You Will Be Doing:

This is a dynamic, full-time, year-round position that is the face behind the counter at the only Alaska Department of Fish and Game (ADF&G) office on Prince of Wales Island located in Craig.

This position serves three divisions of the ADF&G—Sport Fish, Commercial Fisheries, and Wildlife Conservation—provides a vital blend of public service, administrative support, and technical assistance, including issuing licenses, permits, and harvest tickets for fishing and hunting activities; answering public inquiries on regulations, opportunities, and wildlife concerns; sealing hides and skulls, processing harvest reports and entering data.

This program technician position will also occasionally support fieldwork for surveys and research projects, all while coordinating across divisions in a shared office environment.

Our Mission, Values and Culture:

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game operates under a constitutional mandate to manage the fish, wildlife, and aquatic resources on the sustained yield principle, with a core mission to protect, maintain, and improve these resources while managing their use and development in the best interest of Alaska's economy and public well-being through scientific management, public involvement, long-term opportunities for resource use and enjoyment, and professionalism among staff.

This position is vital to the department’s success, serving as the primary public liaison for an outlying community on Prince of Wales Island while supporting residents and commercial permit holders on the entire island.

The position helps foster positive interactions with a diverse group of stakeholders—including subsistence users, sport anglers, hunters, and commercial operators—the incumbent helps strengthen community confidence in ADF&G’s commitment to conservative resource management.

The Division of Commercial Fisheries strives for a diverse and inclusive workforce where safety and well-being are paramount, and employees at all levels promote a culture where everyone is valued, treated equitably, and treated respectfully.

Benefits of Joining Our Team:

The program technician in the Craig office has an immediate impact on the direct users of Alaska's fisheries and wildlife resources and specifically, among all the users on Prince of Wales Island.

The variety of daily interactions with diverse community members, from subsistence users to commercial operators—and the opportunity to contribute to conservative management that ensures the long-term sustainability of iconic species like salmon, herring, shellfish, bears, and wolves for future generations is compelling.

The daily work constantly shifts, presenting an ever-changing environment as the primary duties change due to the seasonal nature of hunting seasons and various commercial and sport fisheries throughout the calendar year.

Working and representing three separate divisions results in a much faster paced office environment offered elsewhere.

You will work in a friendly, supportive environment that fosters both collaborative and independent tasks geared towards sustaining Alaska’s resources for future generations.

Year-round employment with competitive State of Alaska benefits, retirement, and health insurance.

The Working Environment You Can Expect:

This position is primarily located in the ADF&G office in Craig, Alaska near the Thompson AC house grocery store overlooking the north harbor.

It stays busy with a constant flow of in-person and phone interactions, data processing, permit issuance, and collaborative support for area management biologists across the three divisions.

This work will require occasional short-duration travel to post office, transporting personnel into or out of the field, and the occasional trip to another community in Alaska for training seminars.

  • A valid drivers license is required. This is an in-town position in Craig, Alaska and housing, relocation, and transportation are not provided.
