Note: Actual salary includes locality pay (15-40%+ depending on location).
This job involves working as a firefighter in Zion National Park, where you'll help prevent and fight fires, respond to emergencies as a first responder, and support park safety efforts.
It's a seasonal role with about two weeks off each year without pay, based in Springdale, Utah.
Ideal candidates are physically strong individuals passionate about outdoor protection and emergency response in natural settings.
This position is located in ZION National Park; Resources Management and Visitor Protection Division in Springdale, Utah The incumbent of this position will carry out fire suppression and prevention duties in support of the overall structural fire program, and serve as first responder.
These are Career Seasonal positions and will be in non-pay status one pay period (two weeks) each year.
For additional questions about this position contact Matthew Wineteer @ matthew_wineteer@nps.gov Requirements Continued Upon appointment, you must be determined physically fit by an authorized government physician to perform strenuous and physically demanding duties; and also pass a medical examination (which includes vision, hearing, cardiovascular, and mobility of extremities) given by an authorized government physician.
You will also be required to undergo periodic medical examinations throughout employment.
Any individual who is currently holding, or has held within the previous 52 weeks, a General Schedule position under non-temporary appointment in the competitive or excepted service, must meet time-in-grade requirements (must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade or equivalent in the Federal service).
Time-in-grade requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement.
Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal civilian employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.
As a condition of employment for accepting this position, you will be required to serve a 1-year probationary period during which your fitness and whether your continued employment advances the public interest will be evaluated.
This 1-year probationary period period is an extension of the appointment process and therefore requires the agency to determine if continued employment would advance the public interest, meet the organization goals and mission of the agency, and/or otherwise promote the efficiency of the service.
In determining if your employment advances the public interest, the agency will consider: your performance and conduct; the needs and interests of the agency; whether your continued employment would advance organizational goals of the agency or the Government; and whether your continued employment would advance the efficiency of the Federal service.
Under applicable law, the employment of an individual serving a probationary or trial period automatically terminates when that period ends unless the agency affirmatively certifies, in writing, that the individual's employment should continue and that their appointment should be finalized.
In the absence of agency action to affirmatively certify continued employment beyond the probationary or trial period, such appointments are terminated.
Upon completion of your 1-year probationary period your employment will be terminated unless you receive certification, in writing, that your continued employment advances the public interest.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience.
For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 for each federal position listed as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of qualifying experience that you will be granted.
An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience.

Selective Factors: The applicant must have possessed all of the following qualifications and training requirements to be considered eligible for this position: 1.
Firefighter 2 certification (ProBoard or IFSAC accredited), 2. Hazardous Materials Awareness and Operations 3.
National Registry Advanced Emergency Medical Technician -AND- This position is covered by the special retirement provisions of 5 U.S.C. 8336 (c) and 5 U.S.C. 8412 (d) as a Primary/Rigorous Firefighter.
Applicants must not have reached their 37th birthday upon appointment to this position unless there is sufficient prior Federal service in a covered position to permit retirement on or before the mandatory retirement age for this type of position.
An exception is allowed if you are a qualified veteran preference eligible.
- AND - SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors).
Specialized experience is experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to successfully perform the duties of this position.
Examples of specialized experience includes 1) controlling or extinguishing fires as a member of an organized military, industrial, volunteer or governmental fire department or brigade; 2) rescue operations; 3) detection reduction or elimination or potential fire hazards; 4) operation of fire communication equipment 5) controlling hazardous materials incident and or 6) developing, implementing or providing training in fire protection and prevention.
You must include hours per week worked. Structural Fire: The Department of the Interior defines structural firefighting experience as any firefighting experience except wildland firefighting.
Structural experience may be gained though work in suppressing fires such as those in buildings, ships, vehicles, airstrips and aircraft, and other non-wildland firefighting.
This experience may be gained by serving in a structural firefighting position within the federal government or in an equivalent position outside the Federal government.
Periods of structural firefighting gained as a volunteer or paid call firefighter can also be credited. In some instances, candidates may be hired in a dual wildland and structural firefighting role.
Candidates must meet the qualifications required for either the wildland or structural fire function.
Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).
Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Major Duties:
Performs comprehensive patient assessments and delivers appropriate emergency medical care. Conducts and interprets EKGs in accordance with certification and local protocols.
Performs advanced airway management, including supraglottic airway placement and endotracheal intubation with secondary confirmation methods.
Initiates IV access and administers fluids and medications per established protocols. Assists paramedics during advanced life support (ALS) interventions.
Operates and maintains emergency medical equipment and response apparatus. Responds to fire, EMS, hazardous materials, and life safety incidents to protect life and property.
Performs fire suppression, rescue operations, and hazard mitigation. Develops, implements, and supports fire protection and prevention programs.
Trains personnel in fire safety, prevention, and emergency response procedures.
