Key Requirements

  • For GS-06: Firefighter I and II, HAZMAT Operations certifications from DoD, IFSAC, or Pro Board
  • For GS-07: Firefighter I and II, HAZMAT Technician, Airport Firefighter, Driver Operator Pumper, Driver Operator ARFF, and NREMT certifications from DoD, IFSAC, or Pro Board
  • Experience in organized fire departments (military, industrial, volunteer, or governmental)
  • Ability to drive and operate firefighting vehicles and perform non-invasive emergency medical procedures
  • Knowledge of aircraft fire response and hazardous materials containment at airfields
  • U.S. citizenship and ability to pass physical fitness and background checks (implied for federal roles)

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Major Duties:

  • You will fight structural fires actively and effectively based on up-to-date knowledge of layouts, potential hazards, and fixed fire protection systems.
  • You will perform duties at airfields handling aircraft (e.g., fighters, bombers, cargo, passenger) carrying large volumes of fuel, conventional and sometimes nuclear weapons, or highly flammable or explosive cargo.
  • You will provide tactical or strategic level guidance for response personnel at hazardous materials incidents in confinement, control, and containment of various classes of hazardous materials.
  • You will perform emergency protocols and procedures by providing basic life support (BLS) established by the system medical director.
