The County of Riverside Fire Department is seeking applications for a
The County of Riverside Fire Department is seeking applications for a Fire Systems Inspector to support the Indio location.

The Fire Systems Inspector will perform fire and life safety inspections of existing facilities and structures under construction. Additionally, the Fire Systems Inspector will inspect various fire protection systems and features for compliance with the California Fire and Building Code, and adopt standards, issue of notices, and other documents related to compliance. The incumbent will also perform other related duties as required.

Seeking candidates with experience working for a fire agency (volunteering or reservist) or government agency (code enforcement) with inspection duties/responsibilities. Completion of the California State Fire Marshal Fire Inspector series courses 1A, 1B, 1C, and 1D is highly desired.

The Fire Systems Inspector is responsible for technical fire safety inspections and works independently in the performance of field and office duties under the general supervision of a Supervising Fire Marshal, or other leadership assigned to the County Fire Office of the Fire Marshal, or a contract city. Incumbents perform the more routine investigative and compliance work under supervision, while acquiring the training and skills necessary to perform the full range of fire prevention inspection activities. Work is initially subject to detailed and frequent review that lessens as more experience is gained.

Requirements

• Inspect assigned building and development projects for conformance with applicable laws, codes and regulations relating to fire protection and life safety; conduct special inspections and investigations of existing structures as they relate to fire and life safety code compliance; inspect special events, temporary structures, and pyrotechnic sales and displays for conformance with applicable laws.

• Witness and/or certify the installation and testing of specialized fire protection systems that include, but are not limited to, private underground fire main systems, hood duct or suppression systems, fire sprinklers, standpipe systems, self-contained high-rise systems, fire alarm systems, and other specialized equipment and systems.

• Perform annual business and multi-family residential fire inspections; may perform annual fire and life safety clearance inspections of facilities licensed for public care, such as hospitals, residential care facilities, and childcare centers; prepare and issue notices of correction, notices of violation, and may issue fire code permit and other compliance or informational documents in accordance with the California Fire Code.

• Prepare and maintain records and reports of properties in compliance or violation of fire safety laws and regulations.

Qualifications

Education: Graduation from high school or attainment of a satisfactory score on a G.E.D. test.

Experience: One year performing fire safety inspections, building construction inspections, hazard reduction and abatement inspections, plans examination, or fire suppression. *If applicable, this experience must be included in your resume/application. *
OR
Education: 15 semester units or 22 quarter units from an accredited college or university in fire protection may be substituted for the required experience. *Must upload proof of education with application if using this option. *

Completion of the California State Fire Marshal Fire Inspector series courses 1A, 1B, 1C, and 1D is highly desired.

Knowledge of: Technical knowledge of codes and standards; fire safety protection systems; methods and procedures related to fire prevention; applicable fire, life safety and building codes; code requirements as they relate to construction for fire protection and fire apparatus access.

Ability to: Read and interpret construction plans and specifications and prepare accurate reports; interpret codes and regulations for the public; establish and maintain effective working relationship with fellow employees and the general public; effectively communicate in both verbal and written form; operate standard office equipment and systems to retrieve and enter data; make public presentations.

Other Requirements:
License: Possession of a valid California Driver's License.

Certificate: Completion of the California State Fire Marshal Fire Inspector 1A, 1B, 1C, 1D, or the International Code Council Fire Inspector I Certification, or equivalents within one year.
