Job Description

Summary

This job is for a Fire Chief at a Navy base in Key West, Florida, where you'll lead the entire fire department, manage budgets and staff, and oversee responses to emergencies like fires, hazardous spills, and unique nuclear incidents.

It's ideal for an experienced fire service leader with strong management skills and the right certifications who thrives in a military environment.

The role involves planning programs, investigating fires, and ensuring safety protocols are followed to protect the base.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience at GS-12 level or equivalent, including directing fire prevention programs and department functions like budgets, personnel, and operations
  • Management of structural firefighting, airfield firefighting, hazardous materials programs, rescue, and emergency medical services
  • Experience resolving employee grievances, handling disciplinary actions, setting performance standards, and assigning workloads
  • Expertise in responding to unique emergencies, including nuclear reactor radiological incidents and nuclear surety/ordinance emergencies
  • Possess Fire Officer IV, Fire Inspector II, Fire Instructor II, and HAZMAT Incident Commander certifications from DoD, IFSAC, or ProBoard
  • Ability to develop fire protection programs, prepare training drills, investigate fire causes, monitor workloads, brief leaders, and draft corrective action plans

Full Job Description

You will serve as a FIRE CHEIF in the OPERATIONS DEPARTMENT of NAS KEY WEST.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Performing administrative and technical direction of the fire prevention and protection programs for a department or station to ensure long range organizational objectives are met; 2) Directing overall Fire Department functions to include budgets, personnel, equipment, promotional activities, and operational procedures; 3) Providing overall management of a department's structural firefighting, airfield firefighting, hazardous materials program, rescue and emergency medical services; 4) Resolving grievances, effecting disciplinary actions, setting performance standards, and assigning workload for subordinate fire personnel; and 5) expertise in responding to unique emergencies, including nuclear reactor radiological incidents, as well as nuclear surety and ordinance emergencies..

This position requires the incumbent to possess the following certifications for this position: Fire Officer IV, Fire Inspector II, Fire Instructor II, and HAZMAT Incident Commander.

These certifications must have been awarded by DoD, IFSAC or ProBoard to meet the requirement.

  • You will develop a fire protection or fire prevention program for a fire department.
  • You will prepare drill scenarios and tests on firefighting, emergency medical, tactical rescue, and hazardous material spill responses.
  • You will investigate fires to determine cause and origin of fire (e.g., due to poor housekeeping, unsafe installations, improper materials, unsafe industrial practices, arson).
  • You will monitor a fire department's workload to ensure goals are met.
  • You will brief fire investigation findings to senior leaders.
  • You will draft corrective plans of action for fire code violations observed during an inspection.
