Job Description

Summary

This seasonal job with the National Park Service involves managing a database to track park facilities, entering and updating data on maintenance and construction needs, and ensuring the information is accurate for reporting purposes.

It supports the upkeep of national parks in the Washington, D.C. area from late May through January.

A good fit would be someone detail-oriented with basic office skills, comfortable with computers, and interested in environmental or public service work, even if they lack extensive experience.

Key Requirements

Full Job Description

This position is located in National Capital Parks-East, in the Maintenance Program.

The typical seasonal entry-on-duty period for National Capital Parks-East is May-January but can be variable during these months due to weather conditions, project needs, or funding.

Anticipated Entry on Duty: End of May All qualifications must be met by the closing date of this announcement-04/24/2026-unless otherwise stated in this vacancy announcement.

Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience.

To receive credit for experience, your resume MUST clearly indicate the nature of the duties and responsibilities for each position, starting and ending dates of employment (month/year), and the resume must reflect full and/or part-time or total number of hours worked (i.e., work 40+ hours a week, rather than indicating full-time).

If part-time, the hours must be annotated to be able to pro-rate the amount of qualified specialized experience.

To qualify for this position at the GS-05 grade level, you must possess at least one of the following minimum qualifications by close of the announcement: EXPERIENCE: At least one full year of specialized experience comparable in scope and responsibility to the GS-04 grade level in the Federal service (obtained in either the public or private sectors).This experience includes activities such as: maintaining a database for reporting accurate and pertinent information in relation to park assets, maintenance and construction requirements, expenditures, or accomplishments; compiling and entering data from a variety of sources; updating spreadsheets and databases and supporting documentation required for the facility management system; or reviewing data for accuracy and coordinating findings and recommendations with division management regarding issues and use.

You must include hours per week worked. -OR- EDUCATION: Successfully completed 4 years above high school leading to a bachelor's degree in coursework related to the duties of the position.

You must include transcripts. -OR- COMBINATION: Successful completion of a combination of education and experience as described above.

NOTE: Only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours of a course of study leading to a bachelor's degree is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirements.

Two full academic years of study, or 60 semester hours, beyond the second year is equivalent to l year of specialized experience. You must include transcripts.

You must include months, years and hours per week worked to receive credit for your work and/or volunteer experience. One year of specialized experience is equivalent to 12 months at 40 hours per week.

Part-time hours are prorated. You will not receive any credit for experience that does not indicate exact hours per week or is listed as "varies".

Experience listed as full-time will be credited at 40 hours per week.

Volunteer Experience: Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social).

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Major Duties:

The major duties of the Facility Services Assistant include, but are not limited to, the following: Maintains the FMSS database in order to support park, regional, and departmental goals for reporting accurate and pertinent information in relation to park assets, maintenance and construction requirements, Enters data from a variety of sources, and updates program cost components and supporting documentation required for the facility management system.

Reviews data for accuracy and coordinates findings and recommendations with division management regarding FMSS issues and use.

Retrieves data and prepares and presents reports to management from FMSS, FCAS, and CESS databases for operational and fiscal purposes.

Provides information to support park Government Performance and Results Act (GPRA) goals related to asset management.
