Job Description

Summary

This job involves maintaining and repairing the buildings, equipment, and grounds at a correctional facility to ensure safety for staff and inmates, including tasks like fixing electrical and plumbing systems, handling heating and cooling units, and caring for outdoor areas like snow removal and lawn mowing.

It also includes working with inmate crews on some projects and keeping records of maintenance work.

A good fit would be someone with hands-on experience in building trades who is reliable, detail-oriented, and comfortable in a secure environment.

Key Requirements

  • Graduation from high school, GED, four-year apprenticeship, or two-year technical school (or equivalent experience in HVAC/refrigeration)
  • Four years of paid experience in heating, cooling, ventilation, or building trades like plumbing, electrical, carpentry, welding, or mechanics
  • Ability to perform preventative maintenance on facility systems and equipment per codes and standards
  • Skills in repairing building structures such as doors, windows, floors, and electrical/plumbing issues
  • Experience maintaining fleet vehicles and tools like lawn mowers, weed eaters, and tractors
  • Capability to work with inmate crews on tasks and maintain logs, charts, and purchase orders
  • Possible requirement for EPA certification as a refrigerant recycling technician under the Clean Air Act

Full Job Description


Under general supervision at the full performance level, this position is critical as it provides upkeep in building safety for inmates and staff.

Performs preventative maintenance on numerous items and systems through the entire facility as allowed by code and standard. Such as electrical, plumbing, and carpentry work.

Maintains the facility’s heating and cooling equipment.

This employee is responsible, in part, for snow removal and lawn care and maintains fleet for the department to include, but not limited to: lawn mowers, weed eaters, tractor, etc.

Provides repair in electrical, plumbing and building structures such as doors, windows, floors, etc. Works with inmate crew to accomplish some tasks.

Maintains logs and charts and completion of purchase orders for the department.

Qualifications

Training: Graduation from a standard four-year high school or GED or four year apprenticeship program or two year post secondary technical school.
Substitution: Experience in air-conditioning, heating or refrigeration may be substituted for the required training on a year-for-year basis.

Experience: Four years of full-time or equivalent part-time paid experience in heating, cooling, ventilation or the mechanical or building trades such as plumbing, electrical, carpentry, plasterer, painter, welder, machinist, mechanic or masonry work.

Special Requirement: Specific positions may require certification from a federal EPA approved testing organization as a certified technician required by the clean Air Act on refrigerant recycling.
