Job Description

Summary

This job is a part-time student internship in the County of Merced's Public Works Roads Division, where you'll help at the front desk by answering questions from the public, entering data, handling paperwork, and providing general office support.

It's ideal for students or young people gaining entry-level experience in administrative work, especially those from foster care, homeless backgrounds, or who have been incarcerated, who get hiring priority.

The role involves up to 25 hours a week without benefits and focuses on keeping things organized and efficient in a government office.

Full Job Description

Please note: Extra-Help are not entitled to county benefits and are limited to a maximum of 25 hours per week.

This position will provide front counter support in the Department of Public Works Roads Division.

Duties:

  • Assist the public in person or by telephone and obtain information to take appropriate action.
  • Perform data entry.
  • Review forms and submitted materials for basic compliance and completion before processing.
  • Record maintenance.
  • Screen and distribute incoming mail.
  • Scanning.
  • Filing.
  • Compose letters and other correspondence ensuring the information is complete, accurate, and consistent with forms, procedures, and regulations.
  • Obtain and relate information related to department programs and records.
  • Maintain some accounting records and logs in accordance with prescribed procedures and regulations.
  • Provide office support for Division staff.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Operate a personal computer and other modern office equipment.
  • Knowledgeable in Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.
  • Ability to communicate professionally in person, over the phone, and through email communications.
  • Ability to analyze data, interpret directions, procedures and regulations, and develop appropriate responses.
  • Ability to complete multiple priority projects with conflicting deadlines.
  • Must be able to perform job assignments in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Must be able to adjust to unexpected changes in work demand to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
