Base salary range: $37,764 - $49,094
Typical requirements: 1 year specialized experience at GS-5. Bachelor's degree + some experience.
Note: Actual salary includes locality pay (15-40%+ depending on location).
This job involves helping people get information from military personnel records by answering their questions through phone, email, or in person, while following strict rules about records and privacy.
It's a customer service role in a government archives center, where you'll also train newer staff and improve how the team handles requests.
A good fit would be someone with experience in customer support or records handling who is detail-oriented and good at communicating clearly.
This position is part of the National Archives and Records Administration, Reference Service team; the teams are located within one of the Core Units, Military Personnel Records Center, National Personnel Records Center, National Archives and Records Administration.
The Reference Service teams provide world-class customer service and are tasked with continually improving the responsiveness and quality of service provided to the customer.
You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.
Specialized Experience for the GS-06: You must have at least one year of experience at the GS-05 level or equivalent that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled.
Specialized experience for this position includes: Responding to customer inquiries, verbally or in writing. AND Applying regulations and policies to accomplish work assignments.
In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following requirements, if applicable (as defined in 5 CFR 300, Subpart F): Time-in-Grade: For the GS-06, you must have been at the GS-05 level for 52 weeks.
Time After Competitive Appointment: Candidates who are current Federal employees serving on a non-temporary competitive appointment must have served at least three months in that appointment.
Major Duties:
The following are the duties of this position at the GS-08.
If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
As an Expert Archives Technician, you will: Respond to a variety of types of requests for information regarding military service.
Communicate directly with all levels of customers, including high level officials, members of the media, congressional representatives, in person, by telephone, or by e-mail, to obtain clarification of the request and/or additional information which may facilitate the response to the request and to provide information regarding MPR processes and procedures.
Provide information to less-experience technicians regarding rarely used sources and/or obscure locations in response to unusual, sensitive, and/or highly complex inquiries.
Serve and/or lead Center-wide teams in the development and/or implementation of processes and procedures regarding record-keeping practices, policies regarding release of records, and other records related issues.
Provide formal and/or on-the-job (OJT) training to less-experienced team members.
