The Utah State Charter School Board (SCSB) is seeking a highly qualified and experienced professional to fill the position of Executive Director for the Utah State Charter School Board. The Director oversees and supports the growth and development of charter schools throughout Utah. The Director works closely with members of the SCSB, the Utah State Board of Education, charter school operators, educators, charter associations, Utah legislators, and other stakeholders to promote the authorization of innovative charter schools, the success of authorized charter schools, and charter school compliance with state and federal laws.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provides leadership and strategic direction for the state’s charter school system.
  • Serves as a liaison between charter schools and the Utah State Board of Education, collaborates with USBE leadership, and advocates for the needs and interests of charter schools.
  • Engages with legislators at the state level in order to influence charter school laws and policies and to cultivate an environment friendly to innovation.
  • Works with education stakeholders to create policies and procedures that promote flexibility, autonomy, innovation, collaboration, and accountability for Utah charter schools.
  • Engages with stakeholders, including parents, community members, Board of Education members, legislators, and charter associations to promote understanding and support for charters.
  • Manages the staff of the State Charter School Board in an effort to unify the group toward the realization of the SCSB’s mission and vision.
  • Develops, implements, and monitors policies and procedures related to charter school authorization and accountability with a focus on continuous process improvement and implementation of national best practices.
  • Supports the development and implementation of innovative educational programs and practices in charter schools, and ensures that innovative practices are shared across all schools.
  • Works with charter school operators and the USBE to ensure compliance with state regulations and requirements.
  • Evaluates and assesses charter school performance and provides recommendations for improvement.
  • Oversees and manages the SCSB’s budget and resource distribution.
  • Stays informed about national and state-level research and best practices in charter school education and uses this knowledge to improve Utah programs and practices.
  • Coordinates and facilitates professional development opportunities for charter school leaders and staff.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • Master’s degree in appropriate discipline (required)
  • Ph.D. or Ed.D. in an appropriate discipline (preferred)
  • At least 7-10 years of experience in education administration, including at least five years of progressive administrative experience working with charter schools
  • A passion for educational innovation and a commitment to providing high-quality educational options for all students
  • A demonstrated record of successful leadership in education, including experience in strategic planning, policy development, and program implementation
  • Experience working with boards of directors in education, public institutions, or non-profit organizations
  • Experience supervising and evaluating staff and programs and analyzing data to inform decision-making
  • A demonstrated ability to build and maintain relationships with charter school operators, educators, and community members
  • Experience in managing budgets and allocating resources effectively
  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws regarding K-12 education
  • Familiarity with legislative processes, advocacy, and public policy
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills as well as interpersonal skills
  • An ability to collaborate with diverse groups and individuals
  • An ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
