DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Houston Parks and Recreation Department is dedicated to building a sustainable community and enhancing the quality of urban life by providing safe well-maintained parks and offering affordable programming for our community. To achieve this mission, HPARD is seeking an Equipment Worker (Heavy) to join its Facilities Management and Development team.

Potential Candidate will play a key role in:
  • Safely and efficiently operates heavy equipment to perform a series of manual activities and tasks and/or to transport materials, personnel and supplies to complete work assignments.
  • Operates heavy equipment and operates trucks to transport equipment, refuse and/or materials to and from work sites.
    • Main equipment used: Maintainer, Backhoes, Tractor Trailer, Roller Asphalt Paver, Crane, Gradall, Excavator, Box Blades, Dozer, Sweepers, Rubber Tire Loaders.
  • Assignments will include maintaining/creating trails and parking lots; Cut/add swells for drainage; Installs wood bollards, car stops, etc.; demolition of buildings; Opening up areas for new development (remove brush and debris); Moving storage containers and bleachers; assisting other divisions with moving of equipment or stalled vehicles; other assignments as assigned.
  • Performs a variety of manual tasks and activities, i.e. moving storage containers, digging manholes, pouring asphalt.
  • Maintains, cleans and services equipment, vehicles, and tools.
  • Inspects vehicles for required supplies, materials and equipment needed for assignments.
  • Observes and always follow safety procedures and precautions.
  • May investigate and respond to complaints.
  • Prepares and maintains reports, forms and records.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • This position is designated among essential personnel under the City of Houston’s Emergency Management Policy.

WORKING CONDITIONS
The position requires stooping, bending and/or lifting of items of up to 30 pounds with occasional periods of walking on rough surfaces. There are routine exposures to significant levels of heat, cold, moisture and air pollution. The position may involve periodic exposure to chemical substances and physical trauma of a minor nature such as cuts, bruises and minor burns.

Requirements

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Ability to read, write, add, subtract and follow oral and/or basic written instructions as might normally be acquired through 9 to 11 years of formal schooling.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Six months of experience in the operation of plant or automotive equipment and attachments are required.

LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Must have a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and comply with the City of Houston's policy on driving based on the type of equipment the individual is assigned to operate.

Qualifications

Applicants with the following attributes are highly preferred:
  • Applicants who can work Day, Evening, Night, Weekend, and Holiday Shifts are highly preferred.
  • Applicants with experience using the following equipment are highly preferred:
    • Excavator, Dump Trucks with trailer, Maintainer, Backhoes, Tractor Trailer, Roller Asphalt Paver, Crane, Gradall, Box Blades, Dozer, Sweepers and Rubber Tire Loaders
**Preference shall be given to eligible veteran applicants provided such persons possess the qualifications necessary for competent discharge of the duties involved in the position applied for, such persons are among the most qualified candidates for the position, and all other factors in accordance with Executive Order 1-6.**
