Summary

This job involves operating heavy machinery like pavers and milling machines to maintain and repair roads in Nashville, along with performing related manual labor tasks such as loading materials and preparing sites.

Full Job Description

This position is in the Roads Division of the Nashville Department of Transportation (NDOT).

The incumbent is responsible for operating various types of large complex vehicles and equipment associated with road maintenance including performing other skilled and unskilled labor functions.

This position requires the employee to operate but not limited to the following equipment: pavers, milling machines, bucket trucks, or knuckle Booms.

Various shifts will require the employee to work an irregular schedule, including most evenings, occasional overtime.

This position is on call 24 hours and is required to respond during declared emergencies or severe weather activities.


The Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure delivers a range of services, and the nearly 400 employees work around the clock to ensure a multimodal system that offers choice and better connects neighborhoods, residents, businesses and visitors to the place that they need and want to go to in a safe manner.

These employees are responsible for over 2,200 miles of public roadways and rights-of-way, over 6,000 streets, over 300 bridges, 835 traffic signals and over 1,200 miles of bike/sidewalk lanes and much more.

Big events in Nashville consist of CMA Festival, Stanley Cup Finals, Titans games, and any number of special events.

These require big preparation and big clean-up, and the Nashville Department of Transportation employees are up for the challenge.

Requirements

  • Operates large gasoline and diesel-powered equipment under transport or construction conditions.
  • Completes routine, daily and detailed maintenance, safety checks and services on various equipment.
  • Prepares written documentation of inspections, equipment defects and/or other operational problems.
  • Assists in the training and instruction of less skilled employees.
  • Serves as lead person and/or participates in the work of laboring personnel.
  • Disperses materials, loads trucks, prepares subgrades, excavates trenches, resurfaces streets, reshapes road elevation, and transports materials.
  • Uplifts roadbed to grade, including clearing and grubbing the right-of way.
  • Operates various equipment/vehicles of equal or lesser skill difficulty.
  • Assists during special events.

Qualifications

  • Eighth (8th) grade education and one (1) year of verifiable experience operating gasoline or diesel-powered equipment or vehicles.

  • Must have successfully demonstrated competence in operating vehicles and/or equipment associated with this classification as specified on the position announcement.

License Required:

Valid Class B (or higher) Commercial Driver’s License

Additional Information

  • Knowledge of Tennessee Department of Safety regulations for operating a motor vehicle.
  • Knowledge of general construction and maintenance practices.
  • Knowledge of safety precautions necessary in using powered construction and maintenance equipment.
  • Skill in operating machinery and equipment near hazards, such as high-power lines, gas lines, telephone equipment, and sewer and water pipes.
  • Ability to operate Category D equipment. (Some positions may operate Category A-C equipment and in some cases Category E equipment, as needed)
