This job involves operating heavy machinery like pavers and milling machines to maintain and repair roads in Nashville, along with performing related manual labor tasks such as loading materials and preparing sites.
It also includes training junior staff, documenting equipment issues, and responding to emergencies or special events around the clock.
A good fit would be someone with hands-on experience driving large vehicles who is reliable, physically fit, and comfortable with irregular hours and on-call duties.
This position is in the Roads Division of the Nashville Department of Transportation (NDOT).
The incumbent is responsible for operating various types of large complex vehicles and equipment associated with road maintenance including performing other skilled and unskilled labor functions.
This position requires the employee to operate but not limited to the following equipment: pavers, milling machines, bucket trucks, or knuckle Booms.
Various shifts will require the employee to work an irregular schedule, including most evenings, occasional overtime.
This position is on call 24 hours and is required to respond during declared emergencies or severe weather activities.
The Department of Transportation and Multimodal Infrastructure delivers a range of services, and the nearly 400 employees work around the clock to ensure a multimodal system that offers choice and better connects neighborhoods, residents, businesses and visitors to the place that they need and want to go to in a safe manner.
These employees are responsible for over 2,200 miles of public roadways and rights-of-way, over 6,000 streets, over 300 bridges, 835 traffic signals and over 1,200 miles of bike/sidewalk lanes and much more.
Big events in Nashville consist of CMA Festival, Stanley Cup Finals, Titans games, and any number of special events.
These require big preparation and big clean-up, and the Nashville Department of Transportation employees are up for the challenge.
Eighth (8th) grade education and one (1) year of verifiable experience operating gasoline or diesel-powered equipment or vehicles.
Must have successfully demonstrated competence in operating vehicles and/or equipment associated with this classification as specified on the position announcement.
License Required:
Valid Class B (or higher) Commercial Driver’s License
