Full Job Description

The City of Pasadena Public Works Department is seeking a dynamic, forward-thinking, and team-oriented Equipment Mechanic Supervisor with recent managerial experience to coordinate, direct, and supervise activities of those involved in the maintenance and repair of gasoline, diesel, CNG, and zero emission powered propulsion systems in light and heavy equipment and vehicles, and the control of inventory; processes parts, equipment, and supplies.

This position will primarily oversee in the maintenance of sanitation vehicles.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

The ideal candidate will be a subject-matter expert with demonstrated in repairing and maintaining sanitation vehicles and other fleet vehicles, as well as supervising a repair shop.

The ideal candidate will possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrate initiative, exhibit strong problem-solving abilities, uphold safety standards, and maintain a strong work ethic.

  • Plans, coordinates, inspects, supervises and participates in the maintenance and repair of sanitation and street-sweeping vehicles, as well as a variety of other light and heavy equipment and vehicles powered by gasoline, diesel, CNG, and zero-emission propulsion systems.
  • Coordinates equipment maintenance and repair activity with other divisions and City departments, including frequent and consistent communication regarding vehicle and equipment repair status and completion time.
  • Evaluates service needs, equipment, and work methods; reviews and prioritizes service order requests; schedules work; assists in developing comprehensive plans to satisfy future needs for services; establishes and enforces operating and safety procedures; investigates service requests and complaints; determines equipment, materials and staff time necessary to complete vehicle/equipment maintenance and diagnose service needs; and as necessary, explains priorities, programs, and policies.
  • Prepares and maintains records of time, material and equipment used; requisitions supplies and materials; evaluates and may institute changes in work methods and priorities; assigns and determines workload and verifies vehicle/equipment repair analysis or diagnosis; inspects work performed by contractors to ensure compliance with City regulations and standards; directs routine supervision of staff work sites for compliance with safety requirements.
  • Performs follow-up on department requests for services; coordinates activities with other City staff in resolving problems; maintains vehicle and equipment records and writes a variety of reports and correspondence.
  • Work in concert with departments and vendors to assist in developing and improving current and future equipment outfitting specifications.
  • Plans, assigns, supervises and directs the work of employees engaged in the maintenance and repair of vehicles and equipment.
  • Makes crew/shop assignments and schedules work; trains and performance evaluation for employees; takes necessary disciplinary actions; assists in the selection of staff.
  • Responds to after-hours problems related to equipment breakdowns, evaluates needs and makes required decisions to remedy the situation.
  • Plans and implements employee training; evaluates employee performance; initiates disciplinary action; ensures observance of safety rules.
  • Prepares a variety of reports.
  • Regular attendance is an essential function of this classification.
  • Works closely with fellow supervisors covering each other’s shop due to time off, shift differentials, and vacations.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Four years of recent paid experience as a journey level mechanic; OR
  • Three years as a journey level mechanic AND two years as a service writer for an automotive repair shop including experience in a lead supervisory capacity.
  • Experience as a sanitation fleet supervisor is preferred.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

  • Applicants with three or more years of experience supervising and directing the work of heavy-duty mechanics will be deemed most qualified.
  • Sanitation experience is highly desirable.

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process will consist of an evaluation of training and experience and the most highly qualified candidates may be invited to participate in an oral examination and a department-level interview.

There is currently one full-time vacancy in the Building Systems & Fleet Management Division of the Public Works Department. The resulting eligibility list from this recruitment may be used to fill this vacancy and similar vacancies in the future.

Candidates selected for this position are subject to a one-year probationary work period.

Additional Information

Possession of or ability to obtain a Class C California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record. A Class B or A California driver's license may be required for some assignments.

Coordinates work schedules around holidays and the Rose Parade.
