Job Description

Summary

This job involves managing residential recycling programs and reducing waste in West Michigan to support the state's environmental goals, including helping local communities improve their recycling efforts and tracking progress.

It requires overseeing compliance with state initiatives and providing expert advice on waste management.

A good fit would be someone with a science or environmental background and hands-on experience in regulatory or protection programs who is passionate about sustainability and community outreach.

Key Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, engineering, environmental studies and sustainability, physical sciences, resource development, or resource management
  • OR Bachelor's degree in any major with at least 30 semester credits in relevant fields like biochemistry, biology, chemistry, ecology, engineering, environmental science, or related disciplines
  • Four years of professional engineering or scientific experience in an environmental protection or regulatory program
  • Including two years equivalent to an Environmental Quality Analyst P11 or one year equivalent to an Environmental Quality Analyst 12
  • Ability to provide technical assistance to local waste management programs
  • Knowledge of recycling measurement and waste minimization strategies
  • Commitment to promoting residential recycling and compliance with state initiatives

Full Job Description



This position is responsible for the management and oversight of residential recycling and waste minimization to ensure compliance with Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s Recycling Plan Initiative.

This position serves as a Staff Specialist promoting increased residential recycling, providing technical assistance to local waste management programs, and supporting recycling measurement.

It also functions to promote and oversee other waste utilization activities in accordance with the Materials Management Division (MMD) waste programs.

Position Description

This position serves West Michigan but the location of this position is to be determined (TBD) and will be determined based on the selected candidate.


Requirements

Education

Possession of a bachelor's degree in the biological sciences, engineering, environmental studies and sustainability, physical sciences, resource development, or resource management.

OR

Possession of a bachelor's degree in any major with at least 30 semester (45 term) credits in one or a combination of the following: biochemistry, biology, botany, chemistry, crop and soil science, ecology, engineering, environmental health, environmental science, environmental studies and sustainability, forest management, geology, meteorology, microbiology, physical geography, physics, remote sensing, resource development, resource management, toxicology, or zoology.

Experience

Four years of professional engineering or scientific experience in an environmental protection or regulatory program equivalent to an Environmental Quality Analyst, including two years equivalent to an Environmental Quality Analyst P11 or one year equivalent to an Environmental Quality Analyst 12.
