-OR- Successful completion of a Ph.D. or an equivalent doctoral degree from an accredited college or university that is directly related to the work of the position.

-OR- Successful completion of three full years of higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph. D from an accredited college or university that is directly related to the work of the position.

-OR- An equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate level education. (Only graduate in excess of first 36 semester hours may be combined with the specialized experience).

MUST provide a copy of transcripts. NOTE: Only graduate education in excess of the first two years may be used to qualify for the GS-11 level.

Time-in-grade: Current General Schedule (GS) federal employees, and those that have served in GS positions within the last 52 weeks, must have served 52 weeks at the next lower grade, or a combination of the next lower grade level and an equivalent band in the federal service by the closing of this announcement.

Physical Demands: Considerable walking, standing, bending, and/or climbing while working in the field or performing inspections.

Position may be required to operate equipment and/or wear personal protective equipment (PPE) that is hot, bulky and uncomfortable. The work requires average agility and dexterity.

Position will be required to make occasional official trips to satellite training facilities, and occasional travel to DHS headquarters in Washington, DC.

Work Environment: Regular and recurring exposure to moderate discomforts and unpleasantness such as high noise levels, high temperature, humid or wet conditions, irritants, toxic waste, chemicals and fumes.

Serving as a Environmental Protection Specialist GS-0028-11 makes you a valuable member of the Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) team and mission.

This position is within the Environmental and Safety Branch (ESB), Facilities Management Division (FMD) under the Mission and Readiness Support Directorate (MRSD) and located in Glynco, Georgia.

The primary purpose of this position is to resolve critical problems and develop innovative techniques and approaches to be used for the environmental protection of the FLETC training sites and personnel.

Typical duties include: Serving as an environmental coordinator with the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, supporting assigned environmental areas that are high profile in nature at FLETC, including hazardous waste, water and air management, natural resources, and contaminated site remediation (environmental restoration).

Identifying and characterizing hazardous wastes, toxic substance wastes, and hazardous materials constituents using a variety of technical tools, including lab analysis.

Reviewing non-environmental FLETC contract scope of work and providing recommendations to specialists on potential environmental compliance issues relative to proposed work.
