Full Job Description

As an Active Thermal Control System (ATCS) Sub-System Manager (SSM) within the Crew and Thermal Systems Division, you will be responsible for sub-system management and technical expertise in the area of Active Thermal Control Systems for human space flight.

You will be part of the system management team responsible for the support, oversight and communication of the readiness and operational status of several Human Space Flight Programs.

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below.

Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work.

To qualify for GS-13, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level: Supporting Space Flight vehicle programs or providers in the area of Active Thermal Control Systems and operating spaceflight vehicles above and beyond the Earth's atmosphere; Supporting and serving on multidisciplinary teams integrating spacecraft thermal systems; Assisting in the development of cost and schedules for projects or programs.

  • Develops, tests, evaluates, researches, operates, maintains, remodels, and decommissions aircraft and/or spacecraft.
  • Understands, visualizes, analyzes, designs, builds, and operates aerospace or space flight vehicles according to aerospace principles operating within, above, and beyond the earth's atmosphere.
  • Produces, fabricates, operates, type certifies, and/or maintains aerospace vehicles or integrally associated equipment.
  • Investigates phenomena encountered in aerospace flight, monitoring and analyzing unknown or unfamiliar aerospace vehicles, troubleshooting issues with aerospace or space flight vehicles.
  • Plans, researches, designs, develops, tests and evaluates aerospace vehicles and associated equipment, conducts cost analyses, program and project management.
  • Works alongside contract aerospace engineers to perform various duties to incorporate new technologies, improve reliability, extend the life of an aerospace vehicle, or reduce total ownership costs.
  • Conducts specialized studies on flight vehicles, which may include overall and individual major systems components, and additional airborne equipment encompassed in the structure, to ensure their safety, suitability, and effectiveness in operation.
  • Conducts applied research and developmental engineering of specialized habitats necessary for human space flight.
  • Performs analysis, design, development, and testing of environmental/thermal control and life support equipment and systems for human space flight vehicles with human-tolerant equipment necessary to sustain life in a space flight environment.
  • Develops human-tolerant systems and equipment necessary to sustain life in a space flight environment.
