Summary

This entry-level job involves inspecting and reviewing plans for things like private wells, sewage systems, and waste facilities to make sure they follow environmental rules and protect public health.

Full Job Description

Pay Schedule I, Grade 28, Regular Schedule: 35 hours per week.

A vacancy exists in the Department of Environmental Protection and Sustainability, Ground Water Management Section.

Requirements

Under close supervision, performs professional environmental inspections/investigations/plan reviews of the mandated and/or delegated environmental health and/or environmental protection programs to ensure compliance with Federal, State, and local laws and regulations.

Examples of Duties
  • Learns to review permit applications and plans for new construction and renovations of buildings for compliance with regulations pertaining to private wells water supplies, onsite sewage disposal systems, asbestos, and solid waste management.
  • Learns to conduct field inspections for onsite sewage disposal systems, wells, and solid waste processing facilities for compliance with county and state regulations.
  • Learns to inspect solid and liquid waste collection vehicles for compliance with county and state regulations
Examples of Other Duties
  • Learns to complete detailed reports of all inspections/investigations in accordance with federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
  • Learns to appropriately communicate and consult with members of the public and internal and external agencies as required.
  • Performs other related duties are required.

Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in one of the physical, environmental health or biological sciences, engineering, or agriculture, or registration as a licensed Environmental Health Specialist in the State of Maryland.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (Entry Level)
Knowledge of the physical, biological, and environmental health sciences. Knowledge of epidemiology. Basic knowledge of natural resources and environmental protection principles. Basic knowledge of inspection procedures. Basic computer and software skills.

Ability to enforce codes and regulations. Ability to conduct field investigations. Ability to operate sampling and/or monitoring equipment. Ability to resolve problems. Ability to deal tactfully with the public. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.


Licenses and Certificates
Possession of a valid license to legally operate any class of vehicle or equipment necessary to perform the duties of the position is required at the time of appointment.

Current registration as a licensed Environmental Health Specialist in the State of Maryland or possession of a Certificate of Eligibility for such registration is required at the time of application.

Current registration as a Professional Environmental Health Specialist in the State of Maryland is required at the time of application.

Proof of Licenses, Certifications and EducationApplicants are required to submit proof of licenses, certifications and education beyond high school to meet the required and preferred qualifications of the position.

Diplomas or transcripts must show the applicant's major field of study. Copies and unofficial transcripts are acceptable.
