This part-time job with the City of Norfolk's Public Health Department focuses on investigating and eliminating mosquito breeding sites in homes and businesses to protect public health.
The role includes responding to complaints, educating residents, applying pest control chemicals, and keeping detailed records of activities.

Conducts thorough and systematic investigations for mosquito breeding on residential and commercial property.Responds to complaints and educate the public about mosquito breeding during backyard surveys and other surveillance and abatement activities.Exterminates pests by formulating and dispensing mosquito and rodent chemicals in accordance with product labels, to include operating mosquito fogging trucks in the evening or early morning.If needed, engages in ditch maintenance, which includes the use of hand tools (hoe forks, bush axes, brush cutters).Maintains daily worksheets and accurate records of mosquito control activities and chemical applications.Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications Work requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with six months/one year of advanced study or training past the high school equivalency.
Junior college, vocational, business, technical, or correspondence schools are likely sources.
Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.Category 8 pesticide certification is preferred.Category 8 Public Health Pesticide Applicator License required within 14 months of employment Additional Information This position requires the ability to work both independently (backyard inspections) and as part of a team (tidal ditching) and the ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, including mosquito control activities in the summer heat and tidal ditching, which includes navigating marshy terrain wearing hip boots.
