Job Description

Summary

This job involves supporting environmental protection efforts at a U.S.

Marine Corps base in Okinawa, Japan, by handling hazardous materials, responding to spills, conducting inspections, and ensuring compliance with U.S. and local regulations.

A good fit would be someone with hands-on experience in environmental safety who is detail-oriented, comfortable working in a military setting overseas, and eager to manage risks from substances like oil and chemicals.

Note that medical and dental care is very limited in Japan, so applicants should be prepared for that.

Key Requirements

  • At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-06 level in environmental compliance
  • Experience with environmental inspections or auditing
  • Knowledge of hazardous substance and petroleum-based spill prevention and response
  • Familiarity with US EPA and DOT regulations, plus Japan Governing Standards for hazardous substances
  • Ability to respond to and clean up hazardous spills

Full Job Description

You will serve as a ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION ASSISTANT in the G-F DIVISION of MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP BUTLER. ***ACCESS TO MEDICAL AND DENTAL CARE IN JAPAN IS EXTREMELY LIMITED.

Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of Specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.

Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: knowledge and experience with environmental compliance. Environmental inspection or auditing experience.

  • You will provide knowledge of US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations, and Japan Governing Standards (JGS) for hazardous substances.
  • You will provide knowledge of the physical and biological hazards of hazardous substances and oil used by both the US military and local population on the island of Okinawa.
  • You will respond to and clean up hazardous substances/oil spills.
  • You will conduct periodic visual inspections on hazardous material in storage to determine type and amount of hazardous waste on hand.
  • You will dispatch motor vehicles engaged in everyday missions for the Environmental Affairs Branch, preparing and issuing trip tickets, and control trip tickets of incoming vehicles for proper entries.
  • You will identify and procure new technologies that will assist the team to work more efficiently and safely.
