Job Description

Summary

This senior engineering technician role in Hennepin County's Land Information and Tax Services department involves leading junior staff, handling complex land surveys and mapping projects, and advising the public on surveying matters.

The job requires working both in the office and in the field, including outdoors in various weather conditions.

  • Valid driver's license and ability to obtain Hennepin County driver's permit
  • Physical ability to walk on uneven terrain, bend, stoop, work outdoors in all weather, and lift up to 60 pounds
  • Current regular or probationary employee in the Land Information and Tax Services department (internal applicants only)
  • Reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin for hybrid work

Full Job Description

The Land Information and Tax Services department is looking for a Senior Engineer Technician to join their team. This position is responsible for directing and checking the work of lower-level technicians and independently perform work of increased difficulty that may require extensive knowledge and experience.

Location and hours:
This position is hybrid and will be performed both on-site at the Hennepin County Government Center at 300 6th South, Minneapolis, MN 55487, and remote as job duties require. Work hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. 4:30 p.m.
While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.

This is a full-time, benefit earning position. You must be a current regular or probationary employee of the Land Information and Tax Services department to apply for this position. Note: Limited duration employees are not eligible.

In this position, you will:
  • Direct and participate in the development, maintenance, and enhancement of the IRW’s, ALTA’s, topographical surveys, platting, and other surveys requests.
  • Act as a liaison with the Field Units and other groups within the county.
  • Assist peers with the development of complex projects, processes, and tools to optimize the creation, use, and distribution of land survey information and land survey related maps.
  • Advise residents and customers with respect to land surveying.
  • Direct and inspect the work of technicians in lower-level classes and assist in determining solutions and resolving issues.

Need to have:

One of the following:Five years or more of experience in technical non-professional highway, land survey, geographic information systems application, or related engineering work, including specialized experience in the function performed.

Note: One of the following may be substituted for one year of the required experience:Completion of an approved highway/civil engineering technology or land surveying training program.

  • 30 college semester credits or more in mathematics, geography, computer science or engineering-related technical courses.
  • Current Certified Survey Technician (CST) Level 3.
  • GIS Professional Certification (GISP).
  • Licensed Land Surveyor in Training (LSIT).
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit.
  • Ability to walk on uneven terrain; bend and stoop; work outdoors in all types of weather conditions and lift items weighing up to 60 pounds with or without reasonable accommodations.

  • Nice to have:
    • Experience with using computer aided drafting software such as AutoCAD, Microstation, Microsurvey, ArcGIS Pro, and/or other related GIS software.
    • Knowledge of land surveying practices.
    • Ability to:
      • Communicate using visual, verbal, and written methods.
      • Direct a work team or coordinate work with intra-department groups.
      • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with contractors, public agencies, subordinate and professional staff.
      • Read and interpret legal descriptions, laws and regulations.

    Land Information and Tax Services is a department within the Resident Services Line of Business of Hennepin County that covers foundational responsibilities of government: land surveying, land recording, property tax collection and distribution.
